now we were really adventuring. we had left behing the comfort of our brittish friends, and we'd said goodbye to the english language, we were off to gemany!
the start was not exactly fantastic. we sent email to our german frined explaining theat we would be there in three days, and could he hang out with us?and before we could hear back from him, hopped the cheapest flight we could find to berlin. it turned out to be quite cheap, 20 Pounds, but it had everything that went with a cheap airline, minimal service, cramped seats, and a two hour delay. not that you can really complain when your paying less than a tank of gas.
from the berlin airport we managed to decipher the signs, maps, schedulles, and fare machines, and get a train ticket into the city - not bad considering all the german i know comes from
Hogan's Heroes! berlin was a bit of a shocker, coming from London. the first thing that we noticed was the sun(something they just dont get in London), the second was the grafitti. everything that is possible to graffiti had been grafittied, i realized now what a clean city london really was. i never would have said that while i was there, but now, in comparison with berlin, i was quite impressed.
after only one wrong stop we got off in the center of eastern berlin and made our way to our hostel. we were very lucky in our hostel choice, it was a semi random choise, brought about by the heat, and our need to find the nearest hostel regardless of its condition or price, but it turned out to be excellent. it was a huge four story building that was entirely hostel, with a beautiful inner courtyard with tables, chairs, and swings.
our two days in berlin were a wonderfull mix of walking through berlin(mostly the eastern half, we decided we werent super keen on the modern, fast moving western berlin) enjoying the sights, sitting and marveling at the Berliner Dom(a huge, BEAUTIFUL, cathedral just around the corner from our lostel) walking through the occasional museum, and drinking beer in the courtyard of our hostel with Aaron, Adam, Michael(three guys from our room) and whoever else happened to be around. all in all it was quite lovely.
But after two days we were ithing for travel again, bering was nice, but there was so much more to see, and our friend Matthias had emailed and said if we could make it to Frankfurt, he would meet us there, and take us back to his "Willage" Marburg. How can you turn that down??
