Brandenburger TorBuilt as a symbol for peace, later separated East and West Berlin...and we all look so happy in front of it.
No, I am not a jelly donut (...but you may remember those words from Kennedy's speech he gave in West Berlin) however; I did get a "taste" of Berlin this weekend. Okay, that was a terrible pun, I guess I just can't get away from the Valpo way of thinking. Berlin was a lot of fun. I went with friends from Valpo, Neal, Sam and Kelly. There is very little different about the way Berlin looks in comparison with large American cities but it had interesting historical sites such as: the Berlin wall, Checkpoint Charlie, the Victory monument, the Riechstag and other Prussian/Habsbourg monuments. We went to the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, which I definitly recommend if one is interested in that part of German History. Although the Berlin Wall came down 18 years ago it seems like the whole city is trying to capitalize on the historical monument. You can buy pieces of the wall all over the city, it even comes with a certificate of authenticity. It feels weird to buy a souvenir that commemorates the monument, even if its torn down. I did buy myself Berlin socks because it rained the entire time we were there and I ran
out of dry socks in about 18 hours. Despite the weather, Berlin was a great stop off on my visits of big European cities and I would definitly like to return to see and experience more. Oh, and the food was definitly a highlight too. We had Doner, a German version of a gyro, and greatg Mexican at the Cantina.
Okay, now the onslaught of photos...I had to put so many on here so Sam and Kelly could enjoy them too!
Cool spiral staircase Inside the Victory Monument...honestly, I don't know why I took so many pictures of this monument...
