April 12, 2009, Easter Sunday- Eging am See Campground, a family place -Bavaria Kur-Sport
Our day began as we drove toward to Passau and found a free camp area just outside town. We parked and continued our walk into town following the bike trail and stopped at the Dome of St. Stephen’s Church noted to be the largest organ in the world---1,774 pipes!! Easter mass was in progress with the bishop presiding and the music was grand---even though we understood nothing.
Our next stop wan the Information Center for a good map of the bike trail along the Danube. Back to the free parking and “home” to Eging we enjoyed some salad and wieners.
April 13, Monday also a holiday here in Austria, we left Eging and drove to the free camping outside Passau and began biking along the Danube, just beautiful. After several miles--- stopped at a biergarten for lunch then continued ‘til our “butt” said time to return, we haven’t been on bikes since Florida in February.
Our “frei” camping was fine and we slept soundly.
April 14 Tuesday We drove to Linz and walked to
the “Neuer Dom” a large church with strange stain glass windows, rather abstract. After lunch, we continued to MELK campground and visited the Huge Abbey. This is still an active abbey with 29 Benedictine monks and a school. A copy of the bible written by St. Bede over 300 years old is housed here.
The weather is very mild daytime 75 F and evenings 49+F…everyday sunny and mild. We are now in Austria.
