Hotel view.
This was the view from our hotel room window, yeah, there was no elevator and yes, we lugged our bags up every step. The beds at our hotel, Der Gruener Baum, were nice and comfortable, but sleep still did not come as solidly as I'd hoped. At about 8am, when it was starting to get light and I was finally deeply asleep, the Cathedral across the street apparently went haywire. After maybe 15 *GONG*s I started to count them, after twenty more I was sure some madman had taken over the church. Of course when it finally stopped, I fell right back to sleep.
This was our first morning at a German hotel and we were careful to choose a hotel that provided breakfast, because German hotel breakfasts are usually great! At our hotel, breakfast was served from 7am till 10am. We managed to get up by 9am and straggle down to the breakfast area by 9:30. We still had not yet adapted to the time, but it was getting easier to get up at least.
Ahh, German breakfast! The selection varies from hotel to hotel, but usually is a well stocked event. Of course, there's no eggs over easy with bacon and toast here, instead it's more of a buffet style. You find a table and a waitress takes your coffee

A view of our relatively spacious room. and hot chocolate order, then you're off to the buffet. You grab a plate and then you can stock up on bread, ahh, gutes Deutsches Brot. For some reason the bread in Germany is soo good. Maybe it's because it was baked earlier that morning, maybe they put some addictive substance in when they bake it, I don't know, but it's delicious. Then there's the selection of cold cuts: ham, salami, other stuff I don't recognize. Next is the cheese, usually not as big a selection, but the cheese in general is more creamy and tasty! Sometimes there's some vegetables like tomatoes or pickled carrots to add. And there's always a selection of jams, butters, honey, and spreadable chocolate (Nutella). I said earlier that there's no fried eggs, but there is always hard boiled eggs; if you prefer soft or medium boiled, they hotel will usually prepare one for you. After all of that you have to save room for the yogurt bar. There's always plain yogurt and then a selection of other types, and a variety of toppings like corn flakes, granola, some little mix of chocolate-ly thingees, flax seeds, and other crunchy things.
It's hard not to
To the castle
On the way up to the castle. over eat, because all you need to do is take a little of each and pretty soon you have too much food! As usual the kids asked for hot chocolate, which the waitress brought in a little teapot, one for each of them. As everyone should know, the trick to good hot chocolate is that you use milk (no water!) and a good source of chocolate. It's hard to find bad hot chocolate in Germany. The coffee was also good and soon our bellies were full. We struck up a conversation with the waitress, who was maybe in her early sixties, and took the opportunity to ask her about what would be best to see in Wuerzburg. She recommended the Marienberg Fortress and a couple of the Cathredrals. I had to ask her why the church bells had rung for so long, and she explained that this was the 40th of some kind of Cathedral in this region, and so it rang it's bells 40 times!
After breakfast we bundled up against the cold and headed up the hill to the fortress that was only a few blocks from our hotel. Very cool, plus the kids got to play
in the freshly fallen snow. They were ecstatic! Later that night when we said good night prayers, Camille said her favorite part of the day was playing in the snow! We explored the Fortress and spent some time in one of the museums before heading down to the city to check out the "Rezidence" Palace. Unfortunately it was closed, so we just cruised the town and looked over the Wuerzburg Christmas Markt.
At the Christmas Markt there was a girl, dressed in white with a ring of candles on her head. She was handing out gifts to the little kids, so Carter and Camille spoke with her and got little gifts. I still haven't figured out what the story was behind the girl with the halo of candles, but she was nice. Since it was dark now, we had dinner then headed to the hotel for more sleep.
