Yea you read it correctly our last day. Everyone wants to stay, Kirsten is saying sell the houses’ let’s buy a Zimmer. I’ll run it over here. You remember we had this issue when we were in Northern Italy a while back. Did you forget Will, Mark and Caroline still live in Winter Haven; Oh yea, I guess it would be hard to commute back and forth. YEA! HELLO! Gee’s why do I have to be the bad guy. Now that everyone is back down to reality Oma says today is Fest day at Berchtesgaden. Kirsten is out the door and halfway down the stairs. A few hundred years earlier the people of Berchtesgaden had this club or organization that shot guns. Ok, I don’t understand but basically it a Fest ’Festival' to celebrate these folks ... read more

It’s Friday and it’s Market Day in Berchtesgaden. Wooo Hooo, Kirsten loves market days. Ok in addition Brain, mandy and the kids are leaving to go to Lego Land in Augsburg and from there they will meander back to Frankfurt by Thursday morning for their flight home. So Kirsten and I along with Oma and OPa will be staying in Berchtesgaden till Monday morning. But today is Market day and Kirsten is in the car beeping the horn wanting to go. Oma is still upstairs and rushing so she doesn’t get left behind. We all made it into the car as Kirsten was revving the engine. As were pulling into the market area Kirsten is already talking about what she wants to buy. The car is parked and she and Oma are half way across the ... read more

It’s Thursday morning and we all decide to go to a different Klamm “gorge”. This one is located on the way to Salzburg. We all pile into the cars and take off. Oh yea we had a great breakfast. We get to the Klamm and everyone piles out and heads up to the Kasse that is where you pay to get in. Today Mandy gets all the tickets and were off up the tail. Will and Mark are leading the way running, I’m bring up the rear, knowing that they will soon be slowing down. I was right the first 30 minutes is up up up and up. We hiked for an hour to where the water fall starts. Will, Mark and Caroline played in the frigid water while the rest of us just relaxed and ... read more

Just like the previous mornings Kirsten is up and on her way to the bakery. I think she’s leaving me behind on purpose. So at breakfast I ask, oh no I just didn’t want to wake you up, Yea. Today Brain, Mandy and the kids are going to the Eagles Nest. This is the cool house that was built for Hilter’s 50th B-day. Turns out he’s scared of heights so he didn’t go up there often. Since Kirsten and I have already seen the place we opted to do our own thing. Oma and Opa decided to stay at the house and relax, so we all went in different directions and promised to meet up after lunch. So Kirsten and I decided to go to Ramsau where we saw there is a walk Wimbach Klamm. This ... read more

The hills are alive with the sound of music…., Ok, I’ll quit singing. Everyone is up Mandy, Brian and the Kids have reservations to take the Sound of Music tour. Been there, done that. So Kirsten and I along with Oma and Opa are off to see a castle that was built by King Ludwig II. This is the guy that built Neuschwanstein, the Cinderella castle you see at Disney. I know you that Mickey Mouse created that. Sorry the Germanys did it first. Ok, back to our travels. King Ludwig II also known as Crazy King Ludwig built another castle on the island of Hereninsel located in the Chiemsee. Remember yesterday’s discussion on lakes, they call them “Seas” over here. So there is this lake that has two islands one is called Herreninsel (Boy Island) ... read more

I wake up and rollover. Kirsten was gone, it’s 6:30 Am, I stumble out of our room and she is gone. Nowhere in the house, so I get dressed and head out toward the bakery. About half way there I see Kirsten walking back with a smile on her face. I ask if my friend from NC was there and I got a quick answer, NO, she was the weekend help. MY friend was there and she remembers me. She did, what about me, NO, but she asked about Bea. Figures Germans stick together. We walk back to the house and Kirsten and I create a great German breakfast with 5 minute eggs, brochens, meats and cheeses. Around 9 O’clock we all load up and head to the Konigssee or as Brian pronounces it “Chicken in ... read more

The alarm goes off its 5 AM. Kirsten and I are taking Mandy and the Kids to the Bahnhof (train Station)in the next town over to catch the 6:20 AM train to Munich. Everyone is loaded into the car and we’re on our way by 5:30. I’m impressed, our drive was 30 minutes as we pulled into the parking let Mandy and the kids piled out of the car and were on the train in about 5 minutes. Kirsten and I then took a leisurely drive back to Berchtesgaden. We stopped at the little bakery shop next to the house to get breakfast, as we were getting out of the car Kirsten was smiling and getting all excited to purchase fresh brochens, deli meats and cheeses. This is the little bakery within walking distance to the ... read more

After traveling to Ludwigsburg to visit some of our friends, Sylvia and I drove back toward the Czech Republic to stay with some of my relatives. On our drive back, we were finally able to stop at one of the places in Germany I have always wanted to see, Berchtesgaden with its Obersalzburg retreat area that is the location of the Kehlsteinhaus more commonly known by Americans as Hitler's "Eagles Nest." Obersalzburg is located high up in the Bavarian Alps very near the Austrian border. We actually had to cross the Austrian border for about 5km. Since Austria requires a special permit to drive on its main highways, the Austrian police were scamming unwitting Germans in this short 5km area and checking for these permits and handing out fines! Luckily, Sylvia and I had purchased on ... read more

It’s early, Bea and I walked to the baker. She had heard about it and wanted to chat with the lady behind the counter. I think she just wanted to check out all the great pastries. I was right; I reminded her we were on a mission. We needed butter, rolls and eggs. Especially the eggs, whenever we travel to Europe we always get a boiled egg for breakfast. I don’t know why it’s special but it is. The fog seems to be getting thicker as we approached the secret path…. Woooo, Bea wasn’t that impressed until this nice looking German man came through and she had to squeeze by. We get to the bakery and we walk in and the lady looks at me then looks at Bea, her right eye brow pops up and ... read more

I’m up and it’s 6 AM. The sun is just peeking over the mountains. Kirsten is still asleep so I run for the bathroom and get cleaned up. As I’m finished Kirsten is up and ready to go to the bakery. Off we go out the door and WOOO it’s foggy. We feel our way to the bakery and I’m thinking we’re the only fools out here. I was wrong; as we approach the door you can see 6 or more inside just talking and getting their breakfast. Kirsten waves to the lady behind the counter; they exchange their cute German greetings. I’m standing there thinking…. can I just get an Egg McMuffin. When we get back everyone is up and moving around, Bea is all ready for her brotchen. The table was set and we ... read more
