Our roadtrip through northern Germany was coming to an end slowly. The last city our spiritual master gave darshan (the 6th darshan in 12 days) was Leipzig. Definitely a new city for noth of us. The drive down south from Berlin was uneventful. The landscape was mainly flat, it was not much traffic and after about 2 hours we arrived in Leipzig. We quickly checked in in our hotel and then started to explore the city. First we went to a part of town called Altlindenau. Nothing special about this part beside one thing: there are many beautiful old hoses. Most of them are completely run down. One can easily see the reason why. It is simply because of the lack of money/investment. This is not a rich part of Germany. So for many, many years, ... read more

On March 7, 1945, a call came in to the Goldenrod Cafe in West Point, Nebraska. The caller, a reporter from the Omaha Herald, wanted to speak to one of the waitresses, Mrs. Mary Timmerman. He told her that her son, 2nd Lt. Karl Timmerman had just been the first man across the Remagen Bridge over the Rhine. Mrs. Timmerman was a German war bride from World War I. Her son had just become the first officer of an invading army to cross the Rhine River since Napoleon. The Rhine River represented the last great barrier for Allied troops heading into Germany. The Rhine is a wide, deep, swift, and cold river with high bluffs for banks in most areas, and was a formidable challenge for crossing. The Germans had destroyed most of the Rhine bridges, ... read more

Today was a relaxing day in the morning. We were on the boat, docked, and after lunch, got on a bus around 1:30 to go to Heidelberg. A very nice town. It is on the Neckar River, which comes down from the step hills and merges with the Rhine. One of the bridge supports has records of the floods that occur, and with all the rain they have been having here, last Monday, the guide shows us some pictures she took, of cars that were parked on the road, with water up to the windows. Of course, we have seen that in the last months also in Houston, Austin, San Antonio and other cities in Texas. We heard about Frederick I, his teenage bride Elizabeth who was 19 when they got married. We visited the castle, ... read more

Today I went traveling through Heidelberg in the castles it was really fun. We got ice cream and it was really yummy. Then I went to church and lit a candle for great Nan. When I went through the gate Manfred told me a story about a witch who bit the door handle. I saw the crack. When I went on the balcony of the castle there was a footprint mark where a knight had jumped from the top floor of the burning castle. There was a tower that had fallen down because gun powder exploded in it. On the walk back I had a giant pretzel but didn't like it. We went to a playground at the end and it got windy and stormy. We walked ten kilometres today. By Bella... read more

So we spent pretty much two whole days in the gem that is Heidelburg. The old town was stunning. When we arrived we were greete by free refreshing beers at the hostel which were gone pretty quickly in the 34 degree heat. The hostel was really nice and the legend of an owner treated us like family, doing our laundry and just generally being really caring. We walked around the lovely "old town" and had a much needed ice cream to try to cool down. The evening was then spent at a brilliant restaurant in which we shared a keg and a pan full if German meats. A few rounds at various bars around town later and we were ready for a long sleep. Today has been so exhausting (but in a good way). We started ... read more

Heidelberg....one romantic city!! Germany's oldest university town is known for its baroque style of the old town (Altstadt)..lively university culture (oh boy do we know this one), and most stunning half ruined castle Heidelberg Schloss. Many 18th & 19th century romantic poets, most notably Goethe spent many an hour being inspired by this beautiful city. Today as you meander the ally's of the old town, finding half ruined buildings, the light the sound builds constantly making this city probably one of the most romanticized and romantic cities of all of Germany. We have spent the last 6 days just wandering, enjoying coffee's, gluewein (of course) sampling many sausages in a roll in the markets to interesting array of meals at night. German food is somewhat stodgy...I guess you just can't have it all, hey! We met ... read more
