Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

1st weekend trip! Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Ulm
Our first weekend trip! Saturday December 12th-13th Ulm, Ravensburg, Beinfurt Our first weekend trip we headed south to visit Nick's family. We made a few stops to do some sightseeing. The weather on the way there wasn't too bad. Cold and a few flurries with no accumulation. Our first stop was in Ulm to see the Ulm Minster. One of the tallest churches in the area. I remember studying this church back in my art history days but unfortunately I didn't remember too much information. It took us quite awhile to find parking in that some places you have to have [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Frankfurt, November 18th after a very pleasant, nine hour plane ride from Calgary. A little tired, but ready to experience family, friends and some good Black Forest cooking. After 1 day of re-coop and sleep we were in the thick of a 70th birthday celebration, Weiden style. By 10 am Haus Gisela was full to the rafters with neighbours and friends come to wish Lucas’ sister Gisela, a Happy Birthday. Café and kuchen (cake) Gisela style.! The traffic didn’t stop until late afternoon when we pulled ourselves together and headed to a local hotel for dinner for [View Full Entry]

I have been meaning for a while to write about our recent trip to the Czech Republic as well as to Southern Germany. My cousin Hana lives in Moravske Budejovice, a city in the Southern Moravia region of the Czech Republic. Sylvia's best friend Janka and her husband Fred live north of Stuttgart (the home of Porsche and Mercedes cars) in a city called Ludwigsburg. Our first stop on the trip was to visit my relatives in Moravia. This region is from where many of my relatives on both my father and mothers' sides of the family emigrated. My dad's family [View Full Entry]

I just weighed my baggage and I am pretty surprised. Currently it is only 19,9kg for my diving baggage, so I can load additional 10kg of cloth. Only the weight of my hand baggage is as already expected double of the weight allowed :-) [View Full Entry]

There is only one week left and I am starting to get flustered. Last weekend I took the first time my diving luggage and tried to pack it. With all my clothes it seems to get really packed. I also started to panic because could not find the flat port for my unterwater camera equipment. Suddenly I found it in the luggage from my last vacation last year :-) Okay, this week I ll have to do some washing and finish my packing. I also need to check the weight of my luggage :-) Philippines - I am already on my [View Full Entry]

Again, I will apologise in advance. Zac has informed me that my blog is very “dry”. Not sure what I’m supposed to do to wet it up. There’s a glass of Polish vodka sitting next to me, but that wouldn't do my computer any good. After Mum’s concerns that we would be sharing our sleeper compartment with an axe-murderer/drunk/weirdo/all-of-the-above, we had a much smoother trip on the train, mainly because we were sharing with such an on-the-ball Polish lady. So, we managed to get off the train without the same mad scramble as last time. Mum and I found our way [View Full Entry]

Ever tried travelling on crutches? I did. It requires some logistics and is exhausting, but it works. And I was glad to get moving again. The first Saturday in September, I travelled to Bonn to see my friends Katrin, Simone, and Anke. I went by train, and as I needed my hands for my crutches, I took two backpacks for my luggage and carried one in my front and one in my back. My friends picked me up at the Bonn train station, and we had a great day together. The next day, which was a Sunday, I participated in a [View Full Entry]

Our journey to Freiburg was a rainy train ride but that didn't dampen the beauty of Autumn in the Black Forest. Once we arrived it was a quick tram ride to Charis and Yalany's apartment where we met Ingo and his trusty companion Cappuccino. They all welcomed us with open arms and a delicious homemade pizza was soon to follow. The next day, weary from our travels, Ingo took us to a traditional hot bath house. This place was man made, they drilled down to an underground hot spring and piped it up at a wonderful 55 degrees C. There were [View Full Entry]

After leaving Trebenice we were both on a high that can only really be found in a person who has experienced being stranded in a random little town in a country that doesn't speak your language, but still manages to get back on the road... i.e. Della and me. We decided that we really should at least try to see some of Germany on our way home as we drove through both the northern part and the southern part, so we decided to stop in Frankfurt A.M. for the night and see a little of it the following morning before driving [View Full Entry]
