Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Henkka sai postista uudet tumput Pirkko-mummulta

10.-14.11. Referaattistressiä Alkuviikosta Tupu kävi pariin kertaan professoreitten vastaanotolla, pakollinen osuus seminaarireferaatin teossa. Ihan kasvattavaa, kielitaito tosin kasvoi enemmän parin kanssa jutellessa, kun piti odottaa myöhässä olevaa proffaa. Muutenkin tähän nyt laitettiin aikaa ja energiaa, kerrankos sitä ekaa kertaa puhutaan oikein yleisölle saksankielellä. Aiheesta löytyi lopuksi paljonkin sanottavaa, suurempi päänsärky oli saada sanottua se vieraalla kielellä. Juha puolestaan tempaisi käymällä parturissa, ekaa kertaa sitten kesäkuun! Trainstation at Frankfurt Airport

At the train platform inside of the airport: delays of five minutes are announced. Everything seemed so empty/ very few people compared to India. Modern buildings (especially in the state-of-the-art airport of Frankfurt). Nobody is sitting or sleeping on the floor doing nothing, just looking around/ everybody busy (if waiting at least working on the laptop). Liquid on the floor can hardly be something ugly but just coffee. Going North

English On Friday, I started a five day trip to the north of Germany. First, I met some of my former colleagues in Bonn. Some of them still work for the consultancy, some don't. Stuttgart Nov. 2008 with The Haight's!

In Leonberg

Last Friday afternoon we hopped on a Luftansa Airlines flight to Stuttgart, Germany to see a friend of mine from college, Annie, and her husband Seth! Annie and I studied in England together and traveled around Europe but have lost touch since college so it was great to reconnect. She and Seth have been living in Stuttgart for the last 2 1/2 yrs for his job and have loved it! Jason was excited to meet Annie and also excited for the German food. Syksyn tuntua Isänpäivän viikolla

Arkiaamu valkenee pilvessä

Syyspimeä viikko 3.-9.11.2008 Viikon kohokohta ehdottomasti siis oli, kun Henksu alkoi kävellä. Hieman hirvitti, kun se samana iltana alkoi pungertaa tuolille. Onneksi vain nojatuoleille. Vielä voi antaa sen lajitella itsekseen Laren duploja Laren huoneessa (jos Lare on antanut luvan). Niin kauan kuin kolina ja Henkan itsekseen pitämä "oo... hooo.... prmmmm..." juttelu kuuluu, voi olla rauhassa. Toivottavasti Henksu ei kovin äkkiä keksi, että myös Laren sängylle voi kiivetä. Bericht #1 Vorbereitungen

Hallo, da es nun langsam aber sicher ernst wird (6 Tage...) dacht ich mir, eröffne ich doch mal meinen Blog und schreib meinen ersten Bericht. Gut, zu berichten gibt es bisher natürlich noch nicht viel Neues, aber irgendwann muss ich ja schließlich mal anfangen. Die Vorbereitungen sind zum größten Teil abgeschlossen. Henkka kävelee!

5.11.2008 Henkka kävelee! Muutaman päivän ajan Henkka harjoitteli ottamalla muutamia askelia, ja keskiviikkona sitten repäisi lähtemällä kävelemään! Ensin se tepsutti tasaisella paikasta toiseen pikkaisen huojuen. Illalla se vielä keksi, että hänhän vois myös osata kiivetä. Tuumasta toiseen - Henkka ähelsi itsensä nojatuoliin ja siitä seisomaan. Vaikka kuinka monta kertaa Lare innoissaan retuutti Henkan alas tuolista ja yhtä monta kertaa Henkka innoissaan pungersi takaisin tuoliin!
