Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

I just weighed my baggage and I am pretty surprised. Currently it is only 19,9kg for my diving baggage, so I can load additional 10kg of cloth. Only the weight of my hand baggage is as already expected double of the weight allowed :-) [View Full Entry]

There is only one week left and I am starting to get flustered. Last weekend I took the first time my diving luggage and tried to pack it. With all my clothes it seems to get really packed. I also started to panic because could not find the flat port for my unterwater camera equipment. Suddenly I found it in the luggage from my last vacation last year :-) Okay, this week I ll have to do some washing and finish my packing. I also need to check the weight of my luggage :-) Philippines - I am already on my [View Full Entry]

After leaving Trebenice we were both on a high that can only really be found in a person who has experienced being stranded in a random little town in a country that doesn't speak your language, but still manages to get back on the road... i.e. Della and me. We decided that we really should at least try to see some of Germany on our way home as we drove through both the northern part and the southern part, so we decided to stop in Frankfurt A.M. for the night and see a little of it the following morning before driving [View Full Entry]

Heidelberg Just before I left we spent a day in a city called Heidelberg, which I particularly enjoyed. The city lies along the Neckar River, and has a castle that sits on a hill just near the inner city. There is a bridge that runs over the river that I got a few good pictures of, and a university right in the city. We walked through the campus for a sedong to check it out. This university could potentially be school that I could attend on a study abroad program in a couple years. Sandra sometimes works in a shoe store [View Full Entry]

I woke up early, logged on and checked the seat counts; so far, things are looking pretty good. I cleaned up and headed down stairs, then checked my e-mail. Of all the messages I received, I enjoyed hearing from Kirsten the most. She and everyone were winding down their trip at the beach house at Anna Maria Island and were ready for me to come home. I think she’s missing me. I’m definitely missing her. Lori came down and said, “Hey pops, let me buy you breakfast.” That’s a tough offer to refuse; moments later, we’re sitting inside the McDonald’ [View Full Entry]

But oh, was it sssooo good! Drizzled with honey and a scope of vanilla ice cream, I sat there at the Thai restaurant, eating this dessert that was like an aphrodisiac. And I mean that literally. My husband and I went touring around the city of Heidelberg, near the Universtät and the infamous Heidelberg castle, and found a Thai restaurant surrounded by other eateries from different countries. We decided to eat outside and enjoy the European lifestyle of relaxation. No rush, even after you pay for your meal. I had Moo Nam Tok - cold beef salad - and my [View Full Entry]
