Background: As Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.

Our journey to Freiburg was a rainy train ride but that didn't dampen the beauty of Autumn in the Black Forest. Once we arrived it was a quick tram ride to Charis and Yalany's apartment where we met Ingo and his trusty companion Cappuccino. They all welcomed us with open arms and a delicious homemade pizza was soon to follow. The next day, weary from our travels, Ingo took us to a traditional hot bath house. This place was man made, they drilled down to an underground hot spring and piped it up at a wonderful 55 degrees C. There were [View Full Entry]

I arrived in Freiburg this afternoon, and was met by my local hosts. We went and had a nice lunch, and then I took a long deserved nap (after not sleeping most of the night). The hotel is a little strange - there is a shower in the room, but no toilet. I've had worse in South America, but it is an interesting concept. Freiburg itself is a very nice town, with some impressive buildings, and the surrounding area looks pretty nice as well from what I saw on the train. I will write again in a few more days, and [View Full Entry]

Guten Tag!! That's about 25% of the vocabulary I know in the German language!! I should have been prepared with the basics before spending the day there! haha! Well, as you know I spent the day in Germany yesterday observing a Franco-Allemand school! It was very interesting...I enjoyed it very much! The school is made up of half French students and half German students. It is an immersion school which means French and German are both spoken all day. I observed an English class, French class for French students, and a French class as a foreign language for the German students. [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]

I have spent the last two days in Freiburg, it is a little town in the Balck Forest Region. I spent most of yesterday hiking around in the mountains, It was nice, even though it rained on and off at times. there were a few very nice vistas as we hiked. I hiked around with a brother and sister i met from the mid-west of the states who were staying in my hostel. It was a nice change from all of the Big cities. On the way back from the forest we got a little lost, and due to that were [View Full Entry]

Thursday 4th June 2009 Took a walk into the old town of Freiburg its only a 20minute stroll. The town gate leads to a warren of cobbled streets criss-crossed with small alleyways Each street has a streamlet (Bachles). These originally supplied industrial water but now they are playgrounds for all ages including Springer Spaniels! The pavements are cobbled and at frequent intervals have designs- mosaic. The Munsterplatz houses the Minster, which has numerous Gargoyles of varying designs The Munsterplatz also houses a daily market selling food, pottery, toys and fantastic flower stalls. The sh [View Full Entry]
