Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy. To be updated

The days are beginning to run together, and I can’t believe I’ve already been in France for one week. I woke up this morning to find it a beautiful, if not chilly, fall day in Brest. Sun shinning (which I hear is rare) and I have to say that things have much improved over the last few days. The heat situation is still pretty unfortunate, however. When I asked my school about it, they said “mais, it is cold in Michigan, non?” and I replied, “yes, but we have heat in Michigan”. The heat in France is, apparently, controlled by [View Full Entry]

Hunting for internships this late in the game is a pain. Just about the only official internships left on the market are less-than-glorified telephone operators for NGOs. But hey, at least you get paid 30% of minimum wage, right? So as I was checkin out my internship options here in Paris, I decided to start easy. I went to google and I typed "internship Paris". Brilliant! I found all sorts of organizations willing to find interesting internships for me! Then I read the fine print...I'd have to PAY THEM 2000+ USD for a 4-month gig! That's ridiculous. Who would pay money [View Full Entry]

NUMMY. And everywhere here.
Ok, so I STILL haven't really taken any pictures (I want the people here to think I'm cool, not some bewildered American tourist), so I'm including, for your enjoyment, google images of things I've been eating here. Although these are not the actual items I consumed, they look pretty much exactly like them. MMMmmmm... aren't you jealous? The first and most important item is this caramel-y, vanilla-y, slightly crunchy on the outside, soft and gooey on the inside confection of perfection, the canelé. Canelés are Bordeaux's signature pastry. I had my first one today, and so now I feel like [View Full Entry]

Second weekend

 Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon
I had a great second weekend here in France. On Saturday morning I got up early (9:30) and went to the market with Thierry. It's just down the street and they have tons of fresh vegetables and fruits - and it's open all year! We walked back to the apartment on a walking trail that was really pretty. Then Laurie and I went to a friend's apartment to eat lunch and they wanted me to teach them an American cheer so they could film themselves and send it to another friend who's studying in Sweden as a joke. It was really [View Full Entry]

unfortunately, when i go to update my blog, my internet won't work. we have such crappy unreliable wireless, it really makes me angry. so typically i find myself updating my blog at 1 in the morning, like right now. oh well. so classes continue here.....not really getting any easier, but hopefully by the 4th class i will get an idea of how to understand each professor, and how they talk, etc. how to take notes as they are mumbling at incredible speeds....in french. so that's school. right now i'm working on trying to figure out what exams/papers i will have to [View Full Entry]

Bâle/Basel, Switzerland

 Europe » France » Alsace » Mulhouse
Hello everyone! To all those who I’ve just added to my blog…WELCOME or Bienvenue! as we say in French! I’ve been in Mulhouse, France for just about 2 weeks now and will officially start teaching this week once I’ve met all the students. Everything is going well and I’m having a lot of fun living and working in France. Yesterday I spent the day in Bâle/Basel, Switzerland. It was cold and rainy but we still had fun and managed to see a lot of the city. I went with my roommate Amy and her friend, Gemma, who is living and working [View Full Entry]

Saturday continued We relaxed for a while then headed off for Dinner, took a walk into the Town Centre, found a few Bars, but nothing Restaurant looking. We had noticed a place next to the Hotel so decided to eat there. We had the buffet starter, then a Chicken in Tandoori sauce and the local Pork Haggisy type thing, good value, average food. Not sure if I have explained the Hotels we stay in. Premiere Classe are a chain of 217 Hotels that range throughout France, they cost about 40 Euro's per night, and they are more or less the same [View Full Entry]

I think I managed to follow the lecture in every class but Philosophy this week! And Philosophy is excusable because Mr. Dematini speaks very fast and very quietly, and it's impossible to hear what he's saying. In other school news, I had a test in German on Monday-and I got a perfect score! This does NOT happen often hear, so my academic pride has been slightly salved, especially because we had to do an in-class writing in my literature class this week, and I only managed to get down about two sentences. The other kind-of fun thing at school is turning [View Full Entry]

The Hills Have Wine

 Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon
THURSDAY (02/10/2008)--The Little Lions Welcome us to Lyon After playing cards for the majority of our 10 hour train trek, we arrived in Lyon, the third largest city in France, just before midnight on Thursday 2 October. Much to our dismay, our hotel reception was not open when we got there. Twenty minutes passed of persistent banging, when (voila!) a middle-aged woman with hardened eyes and graying hair revealed herself. In a severely groggy state, she reluctantly checked us in all the while murmuring in French. The window to the reception counter opened, rising up like a garage door. Acco [View Full Entry]
