This entry by Tom. Another day, another superb Kyriad breakfast--the last one of our trip--here on the planet Venus. Yup, it’s going up to the mid-30’s AGAIN today. We heard stories of some from our group departing at 6am or thereabouts. Not me though. After a relatively long and challenging day on the bike yesterday, Caroline and I shoved off at about 9am with a plan to ride together until about noon. We figured that we could make it through Grenoble to Uriage-les-Bains and possibly Vizille. We tackled the steep climb out of Voiron and enjoyed the descent to the Isère river. There was traffic on D1075 as expected, maybe a bit more than expected. After several kilometres we saw a sign for a bike path to Grenoble. We checked our maps and couldn’t see it ... read more

Travel Blog Tuesday 10th June 2014 to Sunday 22ndJune 2014 Tuesday 10th June 2014. Up and moved on – took a lot to get out of Paris – quite stressful for us as we were being taken down many narrow roads by TomTom, but we eventually got there. Tom thinking we are heading to Mt. Ventoux and Gaye thinking to Alpe D’Huez – and yes, Gaye was right. J At one Service Centre, a group of Chinese men were taking photos of the camper vans, so Tom said to them to come in. They took photos of us in the camper – much laughter. We ask at the next petrol stop if it is OK to stop here for the night in the parking lot – no go. So on our way. At 8pm we come ... read more

With today being a layover day, I decided to take advantage of the fact that I didn't need to have my stuff packed and ready by 8:00 to sleep in as best I could - all the way to 7:30. That would have been quite luxurious (my body is still quite confused about what is going on, given my erratic sleep/wake times and eating cycles) were it not for the fact that I got to sleep (vs. to bed) late due to the rather sonorous slumber of my fellow traveller. Having had a reasonably hard day yesterday, and not wanting to revisit areas I have seen before, I ignored our suggested routes and opted instead to investigate Deux Alpes, a moderate climb on the other side of the valley from Alpe d'Huez. The climb itself was ... read more

It's funny how quickly one adapts to eventful days: last night at dinner I noted we've had only one riding day and yet already it feels like we've been on tour for a while - probably due to yesterday's unanticipated extreme climb, or perhaps because I am having a hard time finding time to catch up on much-needed sleep. Regardless, it's not a bad life (although gruelling at times). At any rate, I awoke this morning feeling tired and sluggish, with last night's meal still feeling heavy in my gut. Rather than spend almost 10 Euros on the hotel breakfast I walked up the block to the bakery and improvised. I am sad to report the croissant was not up to the standard I expected - must be a big city vs. small town thing. Then ... read more

It was markedly cooler following yesterday's rain (yay!) and gloriously sunny this morning, providing excellent conditions for today's assault on Alpe d'Huez. The Alpe isn't the highest or toughest climb around, but it does have a well-earned cachet that puts it on every serious cyclist's to-do list. I last climbed Huez 15 years ago, and I was curious to see what difference the passage of time would make. But first I had to deposit my bag in the hotel across the street from the lovely place where we have stayed the last 2 nights. I found out when I checked in after my ride that our new home is pricier but very much inferior, although I am pleased to report I did manage to reconnect the toilet seat to the toilet. But I digress. The road ... read more

I'm writing this from Briancon the morning of June 23. For anyone trying to follow this blog (good for you - it seems travelpod's search function has issues finding me), sorry about not being able to update it the past. few days. It looks like I might now have better access to a computer, but it could still be a challenge getting caught up. But just to tide you over until I can fill in the details: I did the requisite trip up Alpe d'Huez and also managed to bag Galibier, which finally opened. Today we do Isoard and Vars - I probably shouldn't have stayed up so late last night! And now (June 29 in Ottawa) I will try and recover the day's events (as well as those of the rest of the trip in ... read more

I'm writing this on June 20, which has turned into a rest day in Bourg d'Oisans since we are spending 3 nights here and the forecast for today is not as good as tomorrow's. So to try and catch up: After supper in Valloire we were met by Brice from the Routes des Grandes Alpes office who had earlier (when we were researching things) expressed interest in our trip - as in he thought he would do a promotional video starring us! We were hoping he could provide some inside information about the state of the Col du Galibier since to this point it was still closed, but we had been hearing rumours of its imminent opening. In fact in the morning he actually drove up to see what the deal was, and of course I ... read more

After a horrible changeover day, feeling fluey and sick from the 4.00am start and the 10.30pm finish we were looking dishevelled and sweaty, ready to greet our new guests. It was Christmas week but it didn’t really feel like a normal Christmas for us. We would have a lot more work to do and we had barely even gotten the hang of what we were doing already. Despite this our guests seemed nice- they were a completely different group to the first week of hardcore skiers. They were all Malaysian and some had never put a pair of skis on in their lives. They were immediately moaning about the walk up the hill (which we have no sympathy for as we do it every morning) and the shoddy wifi. We were a little worried but needn’t ... read more

We had finally got our chalet looking spick and span when I turned to see Viv waving out the window with a big smile on her face saying through her teeth ‘shit, they’re here’! I said, ‘Viv, the window’s open’. I went down to greet our guests; three of them had driven themselves and the others would be arriving later. They seemed nice but slightly intimidating given that they had stayed in the chalet every year for the past ten winters. We knew that their expectations would be high and were already nervous for the evening meal. Luckily, we had had time to prepare before they came and also our chalet manager, Jim, was helping us so the service went smoothly. The next day wasn’t quite the same; we had a lot of work to do ... read more

Arriving at Victoria Coach station on Wednesday afternoon to be greeted by Viv; both our bags bursting at the seams and huge grins on our faces ready to begin five months of cooking, cleaning and SKIING in the alps. We arrived at the Travellers Tavern to meet our fellow Skiworld friends who we would be working with. We quickly discovered that we had the biggest bags out of everyone, so red faced we shuffled into some seats and got chatting. Luckily, everyone was really nice and the Alpe d’Huez crew got to the front of the bus to start swapping skiing stories. Our training week was held in Meribel which we were really excited about because it is a top French resort. As the coach pulled up, we weren’t disappointed; our jaws dropping when we saw ... read more
