Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

With the ski season right in the thick of things, we were finally heading off to try our hand at skiing. Eight of us had committed to a week of skiing and snowboarding in the French and Swiss Alps. For most of us this was our first attempts at the sport - given all of us were Aussies or Kiwi's I guess that's not too much of a stretch. We flew into Geneva, Switzerland and picked up our cars and headed towards the Portes Du Soleil region a couple of hours away. This region is dubbed 'the Gates of the Sun' [View Full Entry]

Ski Trip Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Chamonix
Here is our FIRST SKI TRIP!!! We joined a group of people in which Mark works with to go to Chamonix, France for 3 days and 3 nights. We flew from Newcastle to Geneve, Switzerland and then drove to Chamonix. The drive was nice because it was lightly snowing and this got all of us in the mood to ski the next day. For those that are thinking of doing this, the drive was about 1 hour with light traffic. When we got there (with the help of our handy dandy GPS unit), we checked in and then went exploring through [View Full Entry]

Our second ski trip of 2009 was a week in Meribel with N's brother, sister-in-law and their 4 kids (aged 3 - 11). Meribel is part of the Three Valleys (Courchevel, Meribel and Val Thorens) - apparently the largest linked ski resort in the world. However, the 600km of piste was not enough for us (I know, greedy, greedy), so we organised two off-piste days. The first was well planned (or lucky...), as it was a particularly windy day. For the entire day, only the lower lifts on the mountain were open. Turns out it was a great day to get [View Full Entry]

I must say, it's really wonderful to be dating someone with a real job. Every year Guillaume's company offers a fantastic weekend in the alps to all of their employees, each of whom can invite their friends or family at an additional cost of 10 Euros a night, train and meals included. And Guillaume had invitied me, so for 30 euros I got to come with him to Les Arcs and stay in a beautiful little alpine village and ski some of the best slopes in the world for 3 days. It was a wonderful, romantic, weekend; just me, Guillaume, and [View Full Entry]

Well, shiver me timbers and sharpen me sword! This week we had a double birthday celebration murder mystery party for Gaz and Lizzie aka Capn Redbeard and One Eyed Wanda! After a voyage filled with pillaging and plundering, the Jaded Jewel docked in a cove near Port Royal aka the South Bar- Chamonix. The pirates headed into town to celebrate their homecoming and spend their gold and goods, a night of turmoil and trouble transpired. Shoutin Roger Dagger the Innkeeper opened the evenings proceedings, everyone spliced the main brace and tried to hornswaggle some booty, there were whispers o [View Full Entry]

I received an e-mail from my travelblog recently - it told me it missed me after the 60 days during which I have not logged in. So, I'm back! I somehow just forgot to keep updating - it wasn't that I didn't have time, it's just that I began to forget... Here are some highlights since I last wrote: Beaujolais Nouveau: The first wine in a vintage to be put out is the Beaujolais Nouveau. Beaujolais is the region to the north of Lyon so there were some big parties around here. I went with a bunch of other assistants to [View Full Entry]

Here is the first great week of the year. France has been blocked by snow most of the week....but we were too high and enjoyed great weather all the week. This is our second visit to the Club Med Peisey-Vallandry. Last year was a blast, so we decide to go back one more time. This time as a boys trip, Leslie and I. Peisey-Vallandry is part of the Paradiski area. One of the biggest ski area in the world, including Peisey, Vallandry, Les Arcs and La Plagne. And this year, I went all around it...with the best slope being l'Aiguille Rouge... [View Full Entry]

Franska Alperna! Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Morzine
Hej Hopp!
