Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

The week is going by pretty fast. Tibi and I are working fairly hard. The main researcher who got the funding for us to be here is keen on getting something concrete out of our visit, so we're trying to come up with new ideas and improvements for something they are already working on, in order to get a publication in the future. In the evenings we're still trying to enjoy ourselves :). Last night we went out to an Irish pub with a guy we met here who is really nice. Tonight there was a group bbq for everyone in [View Full Entry]

So the collaboration with the research institute here has begun. Yesterday we were given a couple demos of interesting projects that we can hopefully contribute to. Later today we give our talk on the things we've been working on over the last couple years. After leaving work (I'll call it work, since we sit in a lab all day, just like work in Vancouver), I took Tibi (my colleague from UBC) up the mountain to La Bastille again. He didn't come with me the day before, and this time the visibility was much nicer. We also hiked up this time instead [View Full Entry]

Well, I'm now in France. A really nice city at the base of the alps called Grenoble. I came here by train this morning from Geneva. I'm very quickly falling in love with Grenoble. Its a clean city, surrounded by huge mountains, appears to have quite a few parks and trees everywhere, and my hotel is particularly awesome. Getting around is much easier now that everyone speaks french instead of german. Although, people still seem to have trouble understanding my french accent. I think I'm really out of practice. I took a lot of pictures on the train, since there were [View Full Entry]

Salut Bloggers! Winter is melting away and I haven’t done any blogging again. Bit of an IT issue this season as no wifi connection in my apartment and I can’t facebook or upload photos or blogs at work but today I am at the Couleur Cafe specially to do an update. Winter has slipped much like the last into a cycle of cold & sunny days practising jumps on the mountain and hot & noisy sessions jumping around at après, oh and I do a bit of work too! Have a few new friends this season who I go to après [View Full Entry]

Seasonaires are an odd bunch. Bright, young things, following their dreams to the mountians and spending six months of winter working in menial jobs so they can be there, every day, skiiing or snowboarding. How amazing it must be, back home, to announce to your friends and family 'I'm off to do a season, eh?' How great it looks to us as we arrive in our chalet and they tell us tales of 'last weeks powderdays, eh?' and how they are 'going out to hit some sweet spots this arvo, eh?'. (BTW, Nearly every seasonaires voice has the ozzie/kiwi habit of [View Full Entry]

Well it's been another 60 days and I'm updating again. I just seem to forget about this blog. Here are some highlights of the past 60 days: Prague: I went to Prague for the last weekend of January to see 2 of the Miami skating teams compete at their international competition. I traveled alone and everything went really well. I didn't realize how much I missed my old friends - it was really revitalizing to see them and spend some time with them. The teams did well - 5th place and 4th place. Unfortunately I caught a really bad cold and [View Full Entry]

As I flew into Geneva to meet my Kiwi friend Neil for a weeks snowboarding in the Chamonix valley of the French Alps I couldn't quite contain the excitement, little did I know that the holiday would far exceed all of the expectations I had laid upon it. We drove from Geneva to the Alps at night and the excitment grew as we passed shadows of mountains, heavier and heavier snow falls and noticed great banks of snow piled on the sides of the road. We arrived in our resort - Argentiere - very late and fell straight to sleep with [View Full Entry]

Dan Moss popping the question to his beloved girlfriend Rachel meant that a joyous occasion would soon be upon us.....another stag do! Dan took the lead in organising this (and as Rach says she wishes he put half as much effort into organising the actual wedding day!) and we're massively grateful as it turned out to be the best trip away yet! A week of skiing and snow-boarding in Chamonix all the while holed up in a luxury chalet complete with WI-FI, jacuzzi, sky tv and even better a dishwasher! This was taking boys club up a notch! The usual dawn start [View Full Entry]
