Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

When we checked our email today, we had heard back from the family of Joshua's friend Zack Schaller, who lives in Switzerland. His father, Steve, said that we might be able to arrange to get together as they are just across the border from France in Switzerland, not far from Evy's friend Sandy where we are heading next. Steve also shared some details of a trip that they had made which included going to Vimy Ridge, the WWI battle field where so many Canadians had died. At first, we thought it sounded like the battle field was close to the town [View Full Entry]

Grenoble tram

The area around Grenoble was a hot spot of Resistance activity during WWII with the mountains providing an ideal base. Today are plan is to visit the Museum of the Resistence and get a sense of some of this history. After making a quick trip out to the Boulangerie to pick up croissants for breakfast, we got a good start and were out of the apartment relatively early. After making a trip to the post office to mail some school work back to Canada for marking, we made our way to the museum. The museum, it turned out, was free which [View Full Entry]

Beginning to understand

With the rain still pouring down, none of us was in a hurry to get up this morning and we got a late start to the day. Checking our email responses to questions about accommodation, we have found some likely choices and will have to book today. After a rather leisurely morning, we got back down to school work in the afternoon. With our rather intermittent internet connection, we were constantly moving our antenna around to get a signal. Later in the afternoon, we seemed to get this problem solved and were able to get the emails from places to stay [View Full Entry]

Internet on our patio

We had plans to go to the nearby town of Aix-les-Bains with Tsetse today, but it poured rain all night long and was still raining this morning. We shared a few text messages back and fourth, before Evy and Tsetse decided to go shopping instead. While they were out, I found and emailed a few more places in Paris that we might stay. After Evy got back, we had received an email from here friend Sandy, who lives in Northern France near Strasbourg, inviting us to visit. We are now starting to sketch out the remaining two months of our world [View Full Entry]

Joshua's math: measurement

With less than a week to go before we leave, we still haven't figured out where we are going to stay in the big cities of Paris and London. Evy and I began our day with a trip to train office where we found out some details about trains North as well as trains from France to England. We also went to the book store where we tried to find an English language travel guide to France, but without any luck. Back at the apartment, we shifted though the email responses to apartment queries and responded to a few of the [View Full Entry]

We all slept in this morning, and it was a much more restful night not having the rock climbing to think about. Tsetse's tv has a usb port for a hard drive, but it didn't seem to be able to read our ipod. They do have though, a digital photo frame (also with a usb port) and with a little coaxing, we were able to get the photos to play in random order. It was kind of fun seeing them on a bigger screen and also trying to figure out where each one was taken, as there was no rhyme or [View Full Entry]
