Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Salut!

Raining weather conditions convinced me to rest for a while in Annecy (Little Venus of Alps). Indeed a lot of water here flowing from different directions... and wine, which lags a bit my stay in France. Even though Annecy is not a very large city it has got chatoux and a lot of charming corners where globetrotters like me can taste local delicatessen. Meeting a lot of different interesting people. Time to go back and have a nice meal with a glass of wine, stay tuned, ;> . [View Full Entry]

Devil's Wheel
Night in Avignon
?????????????????

I feel...strange. I'm not...moving. I'm not in a different town every day living out of my larva shaped backpack. I'm not stealing individually portioned jams to eat with my baguette later on. I'm...still. I arrived in Chambery on Sunday night, after another disasterous EZ Jet flight. And after telling the man who manages the student apartments that I am more comfortable with English for important information, he proceeds to speak to me in French the whole time. Thanks bub. If I blow up your building because I don't know how to properly operate the oven, blame it on yourself. I've ha [View Full Entry]

After having a quick breakfast in Dijon, we set off to Chamonix/Mont Blanc on the France/Italy border. If you think Mont-Tremblant is nice, you will simply love Chamonix. It's like tremblant only 100 times bigger and, well, its the French alps!!!! We got the and it started to drizle but nothing that would stop us from walking around. Not much was going on there since it was a Monday and not their peak season, so it was perfect for us!!! On the side of Chamonix, which the highest peak in France, there's a massive glacier which is absolutely stunning. it was [View Full Entry]

This morning we were going to head to the train station to buy the tickets to go North to Evy's friend Sandy tomorrow. When we checked our email though, there was a message from Steve, the father of Joshua's friend Zack, inviting us to come and stay a few days with them in Zürich, Switzerland. It wasn't something that we had considered, but upon looking up the train schedules and costs, we determined that it would be possible. We have met Zack's parent's, Steve and Stephanie, but really don't know them that well so it was quite kind of them to [View Full Entry]
