Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

What a treat to wake up to a beautiful view of Lyon. We had breakfast on the concierge floor where they served eggs, bacon, sausage, baked tomatoes, sauteed mushrooms, meats, cheeses, croissants, breads, jams and fruit. Since we have lunch reservations at 12:30 today at Paul Bocuse we tried to eat light. We drove to Pérouges a tiny town originally inhabited by craftsmen — mainly farmers and linen weavers that was founded by a Gallic colony returning from Perugia in Italy. In 1167, the Seigneur d'Anthon famously shut the commune's walls against the troops of the Archbishop of Lyon, a [View Full Entry]

Welcome to Lyon Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Lyon
Lots of movement in the last couple of weeks. Just to give everyone an immediate update, I am safe and sound in my new home in Lyon. The family is great so I think this shall be a wonderful stay. During my first night out with the siblings of the family (all ranging in the twentys) we went to a small cinema and saw Woody Allen’s newest film “Whatever Works.” It was very funny, but in English with french subtitles, which was actually good for me to pick up some new vocab. What was even better was sitting around for about [View Full Entry]

Today we depart the Uniworld River Royale, check out time is 8 am. We share a taxi with some other couples from the ship to the Gare (train station) and we are off to Lyon. I wasn't sure if we had to purchase a ticket or if we could just use our rail pass and the only girl working at the ticket booth didn't know the answer. We had a 9:13 am train to catch and we had to wait until 9 am for the supervisor to come and explain whether we needed to purchase tickets or we could just board [View Full Entry]

Our day began with "French toast", how perfect for beginning a day in the city known for French gastronomy! I found it a bit sweet, with a lot of brown sugar and honey but none the less it was still delicious. After breakfast we departed for a tour of Vieux Lyon. It was chilly this morning and overcast and we were really worried that we would have our first day of rain, but luck was with us and as the day progressed, the sun burned off the clouds and we had another glorious day! Our tour was by bus and we [View Full Entry]

We arrived in Lyon after dinner. We had to go through three more locks. (I said in my earlier blog that there were 9 locks to pass but I was wrong, there are a total of 14!). Dinner was delicious. We had a choice of pate or salad with frommage. Michael had both! The soup was cream of vegetable and for our entrees we had a choice of chicken in a mushroom cream sauce or salmon with pesto. For dessert Michael had caramel creme brulee. I tried the meringue cookie with ice cream and berries. It was so good! It was [View Full Entry]

Today is Thursday and the only reason I know that is from the daily program! I continue to try the daily breakfast special, today was crepe with berries and it was so good! Of course I also had to have croissant and today I had 2! This morning we started with an onboard private lecture from the famous chocolate house, Valrhona. We had a powerpoint presentation and learned all about how to chocolate is made. After the lecture we had a chocolate tasting and we tasted 5 different varieties of dark chocolate from different regions of the world. Valrhona has relationships [View Full Entry]

To the Alps! Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Grenoble
Wow, a great couple of days there in Grenoble. The city itself wasn’t all that special, but the mountains surrounding the city are awesome. Yesterday I had the pleasure of hiking to the highest peak around the city and I think it was really the highlight of the trip for me so far. I love doing athletic things and I love being in Nature. I really should make an effort to go hiking or camping more often. Open invitation for anybody who wants to come with me. The hike was actually less challenging than I was expecting. I think I overestimated [View Full Entry]

Sweet!
Also sweet!
Nice View

After our dramatic change of plans, we spent two days driving North towards the French Alps. This trip saw us stopping at the Verdon Gorges for a swim in the coldest water I have ever been in. It was almost glacial but felt fantastic after sitting in the van all morning. Even though it was a long drive, as soon as we left the coast behind, we also left the traffic and felt instantly more relaxed. Our overnight stop was a lake somewhere before the start of the Alps. It appeared over the hill and was the most amazing shade of [View Full Entry]

Aires are great. How's that view for 6 euros? That's Mont Blanc in the distance.
What a view.
Let the hiking begin!

I live in the dog shit capital of the world. The French call it "le crottin de chien," but a rose by any other name, so to speak. The owners give their pooches carte blanche, and for the rest of us, it's like a game of minesweeper out there. You can always pick out the ones who are going to leave it. They have a preemptive look of guilt about them, and their eyes dart back and forth to keep a look out for potential witnesses to their little transgression. Then, when the deed is done, they abscond with alacrity, secure [View Full Entry]
