Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

This week was a very demanding week, workwise...I worked a day and a half! We had Armistice Day (Veterans' Day for you Americans) off on Wednesday, but I normally have Wednesdays off, so that was a bit of a letdown. I stayed home Thursday due to a nasty stomach bug that I can only assume came from my students and their grubby little hands. I had previously arranged to have Friday off (I was able to make up the hours a few weeks ago) so that I could catch an early train to Grenoble. Elizabeth, a friend I've known since first [View Full Entry]

Wow, a great couple of days there in Grenoble. The city itself wasn’t all that special, but the mountains surrounding the city are awesome. Yesterday I had the pleasure of hiking to the highest peak around the city and I think it was really the highlight of the trip for me so far. I love doing athletic things and I love being in Nature. I really should make an effort to go hiking or camping more often. Open invitation for anybody who wants to come with me. The hike was actually less challenging than I was expecting. I think I overestimated [View Full Entry]

Friday, June 19th At the beginning of this journey I wondered how we would handle the longer than normal vacation. Now that we are almost half way done I am surprised at some of the things I have discovered. It seems that 2 weeks is the right amount of time to unwind and finally relax. Being gone for 2 weeks is like getting a deep tissue massage instead of a back rub. You begin to remember what life was like before constant access to email, the internet, the news, fighting traffic and paying bills. As corny as it sounds, it is [View Full Entry]

Thursday, June 18th About an hour To the north of Grenoble, just past the Chambery, is a small city near the Swiss border called Annecy. It's only 30 minutes from Geneva, and it sits on the edge of a mountain lake with very clear water. Annecy is like a little Venice or Amsterdam, complete with its own set of canals, a medieval prison, and a castle on the hill overlooking the town. Pedestrian bridges are sprinkled throughout the quaint streets and flowers sprout from the windows of the buildings and the sides of the bridges. As soon as we arrived we [View Full Entry]

Wednesday, June 17th The morning started out pretty funny. Tiffany decided to take a walk around Brignoud with one of the girls since we weren't going into Grenoble until later that day. A few minutes later she came back and I asked her what was wrong, why did she come back so early ? Tiffany said she was worried she might get a ticket for disturbing the peace. I was confused naturally. She laughed and said that one of the guys in town had whistled at her and waved, apparently appreciating the new shorts she had purchased the day before. Embarrassed [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, June 16 By the time we woke up Tuesday morning, Pierre and Christine were already in the garden working. Over breakfast we decided to tackle Charmant Som, which is one of the peaks in the Chartreuse, and the historical Abbey of Chartreuse. The heat was getting pretty bad this week, so before we left for the mountains we stopped off at the local sports store and bought shorts for Tiffany and the girls. I first discovered Charmant Som when Pierre took me there several years ago. A very steep hiking trail takes you to the top, where a cross marks [View Full Entry]

The two of us don't really need much of an excuse for a weekend away, so when Matt and Janelle, our friends from Australia moved to Grenoble in the French Alps how could we resist? We took a day off work, and one of those horrible early morning flights and off we went for a long weekend. We flew into Lyon and took the bus to Grenoble where we were joined by JB another friend from uni who had travelled down by train from Switzerland. We marvelled at the fact that the five of us (four of us had gone to [View Full Entry]

Monday, June 15 Monday was our first day in the Rhone-Alps region of France. Grenoble is in a valley practically surrounded by high mountains with snow at their peak even in June. Pierre technically lives in the suburbs of Grenoble in a little town called Brignoud. From Brignoud it's easy to access the many hiking trails in the summer and ski resorts in the winter. When you step out of Pierre's house, your eyes are immediately drawn to the immense mountains at your doorstep. With so many mountains it's no wonder that Grenoble hosted the winter olympics in 1968. If you [View Full Entry]

This morning we were going to head to the train station to buy the tickets to go North to Evy's friend Sandy tomorrow. When we checked our email though, there was a message from Steve, the father of Joshua's friend Zack, inviting us to come and stay a few days with them in Zürich, Switzerland. It wasn't something that we had considered, but upon looking up the train schedules and costs, we determined that it would be possible. We have met Zack's parent's, Steve and Stephanie, but really don't know them that well so it was quite kind of them to [View Full Entry]

When we checked our email today, we had heard back from the family of Joshua's friend Zack Schaller, who lives in Switzerland. His father, Steve, said that we might be able to arrange to get together as they are just across the border from France in Switzerland, not far from Evy's friend Sandy where we are heading next. Steve also shared some details of a trip that they had made which included going to Vimy Ridge, the WWI battle field where so many Canadians had died. At first, we thought it sounded like the battle field was close to the town [View Full Entry]
