Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Jan in Cham

 Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Chamonix
Where did January go ? Never a dull moment in Chamonix, be Easter before we know it. After all the partying over Christmas and New Year, we're now settled into the regular apres scene at the Chambre 9 and our fish & chip Fridays and Sunday roasts at the Monkey bar. When my estate agent rang one night at 6pm, he thought I was at a rock festival! Last Friday had fish & chips (with proper mushy peas) and early night as I was working at the airport on Saturday. Snow caused chaos, we had to hold all the flights as [View Full Entry]

We stayed in France for Christmas. The weekend before the day, we went to Germany to take care of some business at the US base in Kaiserslautern and then to visit some friends who live in Wiesbaden. Unfortunately, we have no photos of that Germany trip. Wiesbaden is very nice-- I suspect we will go back and visit our friends again and will be sure to take some pics. After we came back, we had a day of rest from the road and then loaded up our gear and headed to Chamonix in the French Alps for some snowboarding. I was [View Full Entry]

Bonnes Fetes

 Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Chamonix
I’m just about recovered from all the festivities in Chamonix so about time for another blog. Christmas Eve we all tagged along on the regular Monday night bar crawl the reps organise around town. I only made it to 3 of the 5 bars as there were free shots in every bar which knocked me out about 1am. Rosy and I only managed a couple of blue runs on Christmas Day but by time we got back at 4pm the turkey was almost ready. We all opened the parcels we had saved together, some interesting presents from our friends and families [View Full Entry]

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas. And, as I was unlikely to get one in London, I figured Neddy better go to the mountain and try to sort one out. As it turned, out, it was not an uneventful adventure but a great time was had by all. High First off, a high - managed to book the flights from City airport, my favourite airport in the whole of London. Why? Two reasons. First, it is very easy to get to - you can get there in about 40 mins from my place just using ordinary London Transport (tube and DLR). [View Full Entry]

Last blog before Christmas and I finally went up on the slopes for the first time on Sunday. It was -12 degrees up there, practiced on some easy greens as its 3 winters since I was last on my snowboard. Was a bit rusty and kept falling over but cheered up on Sunday night as we found a bar serving roast dinners so we went for le ros bif! Safe to say it’ll be a white Christmas here, the festivities began this week with our office party on Tues night. Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, some festive music, dodgy shots [View Full Entry]

Bonjour Chamonix

 Europe » France » Rhône-Alpes » Chamonix
Arrived in Chamonix with my snowboard on Monday night and moved into my new home for Winter. Went straight out to the late night snack bar for something to eat and had a complete memory blank of French but somehow managed to order and exchange pleasantries in Italian which was surreal ! Chamonix is quite a scenic alpine town surrounded by snowy mountains. Its snowing here and quite cold already, zero degrees today I think. Until the season gets started properly we are working Mon-Fri with weekends off which is a novelty ! Everyone at the office seems very friendly so [View Full Entry]

First impressive view from the road, approaching Chamonix.
Chamonix Mont-Blanc Pure, dry cold air; amazing scenery; beautiful high mountains where ice and snow never melt; lots of fantastic rock climbing routes; charming towns and small villages... Chamonix is a very special place. I camped right at the foot of the Glacier Les Bossons for 2 weeks and was surprised to be able to walk around in the morning wearing a t-shirt when the thermometer showed 5°C. I got out-of-breath and nearly fainted when I walked too fast up stairs in the Aiguille du Midi observatory, some 3000m high. I felt comfortable climbing on my own using my rope clamp [View Full Entry]

Bonjour! So as I sleep soundly, Mom is busy coming up with what we need to tell you all in our next blog. A little random thoughts to go with random pictures. 1) The first thing we wanted to share with you was an experience we had with our two friends from Israel (father and son). We wandered along the trail one day and came upon them with their little stove blazing and asked us if we would like to join them. We hesitated and Dan, the father asked if someone was waiting for us in Cormayeur? No we replied, who [View Full Entry]

Day 9, Glacier de Trient
Our tiny little room
Found a nice place to do some writing

Greetings from rainy Chamonix! We completed the tour yesterday and used our rain gear for the first time....for only about 10 minutes. We can not believe our good fortune....it is cool now, rainy and cloudy and as we look up, can not even see Brevent....2500 m above us were we stood yesterday. It was a long final day....over 9 hours and 2000m down. I think we are in shock a bit that we completed it and that everything went so well. We slept well last night and were at a loss this morning as there was no trail ahead of us! [View Full Entry]
