Bob had planned our route from Spain back to France so that we started off on the motorway then once clear of Narbonne we would use the ordinary N roads which run parallel to the toll road. Didn't quite end up as the route we had expected. First of all we failed to find the motorway near Figueres and drove almost to the border before we found a way on. Very odd ! We paid 0.85 euro cents for the honour of travelling 1 km along the Spanish bit of the toll road and then we were in France. We pulled off the motorway as planned just before Narbonne and Tina TomTom directed us to an N road but it was awfully full of stops, starts, roundabouts, speed bumps, traffic lights and irritatingly slow traffic. Oh what a glorious feeling it was to sleep in, although tempered somewhat by the barking in my hamstrings from yesterday's extended climb. At 9:00 it is already 23 degrees with a forecast high of 35 - thankfully our hotel 'room' (somewhat of a misnomer, as there isn't very much) is air-conditioned. While our laundry tumbled next to the gas pumps I sent postcards on their way, picked up gifts for those at home, and meandered through the village streets before returning to the hotel to swap out my now badly-worn chain. Now I think I'll go for a dip in the pool. Ah, the life of leisure when you don't have to bearthe heat and wind for a day. ... read more

A long, hot, and demanding ride prior to a day off saw us all get in rather late, so this entry will likely only be posted on Saturday (especially since France is playing another World Cup match tonight, and I feel obligated to watch. You know - out of respect for our hosts). Always a glutton for punishment (well, at least until my next birthday, at which point I may decide to start making some concessions), I opted to do the 'full' climb of Mont Ventoux, which first took me through the Gorges de la Nesque. Although this necessitated giving back much of yesterday's hard-earned elevation, it was well worth it as the views through the Gorge were exceptionally pleasant. Surprisingly, the road through it has a high mid-point, so I ended up giving back even ... read more

Our guests had departed so the courts at Nyons beckoned us again. The morning started out sunny & cool but by the time we’d finished our game the day had really warmed up. Dawn, Michel & Dawn’s sister Diane were heading from Castres to Orange where we planned to meet them in the afternoon. After a series of SMS messages we managed to co-ordinate our movements and met them at their hotel. After a drink and a chat, we headed to the amazing Roman amphitheatre (Théatre Antique d’Orange) and Arc de Triomphe for which the town is famous. The amphitheatre, built under Augustus' reign in 1AD was quite incredible in age, size and the degree of preservation. Some presentations at the top of past ‘spectacles’…opera, plays & rock concerts, gave a real feel for what it ... read more

K - My usual caveat applies to this blog - traveling for several months is not vacation and things that you would appreciate on a 2 week holiday can be wasted as pearls before swine when they crop up in the middle of a 14 month trip. So........ I did not want to visit the South of France on this trip due to time constraints and also because although areas of the South of France are stunning it gets incredibly busy in the Summer and heat, traffic and tourists were not high on our "must-do" agenda. We had agreed (I thought) that our focus instead was to be on other less busy, areas of France. Moreover, I had just spent nearly 24 hours getting from the South of France up to Limoges to meet Mark and ... read more

On to France! Tonight we are staying in the town of Orange near Avignon, France. It was a long travel day but we visited two incredible places. First we went to the medieval castle town of Carcassone. The kids, Kim and I enjoyed exploring the old streets looking in shops and poking our heads around corners. We are becoming experts at walking on cobblestones! The second site we visited was the Ponte Garde aqueduct. This 2000 year span crosses the River Garde. Wow! What a sight it was.... Tomorrow we visit Avignon and Nice. ... read more

Today I went to Orange to see the best preserved Roman theater outside of the Middle East. And let me tell you, it was impressive... and covered in scaffolding. But still, it's cool. It can hold 10,000 specatators and has pretty incredible acoustics for being over 2000 years old. I took the train there, after have to sprint to the train station in Marseille from the bus stop. Ug. It was a close shave, let me tell you. So I collapsed, panting into a seat and enjoyed the lovely scenery sweep past me. I got to see Arles again and Avignon from the window. Then I hopped off the train at Orange and immediately tried to find the bus station so I could go to Vaison la Romaine and kill two theaters with one stop. However, ... read more
