On Sunday 24th
June I got up at 6am, which is a big sacrifice on our one sleep-in morning of the week, especially when we had been enjoying cocktails a few short hours before. However, this was for a good cause! I was off to see the Nice Ironman kick off! Strangely, Nick didn’t share my excitement and opted to stay in bed.. weird!
The race began with the 3.8km swim. Watching the 2,500 athletes take off at 6:25am was a sensational experience. There was a huge crowd gathered along the beach, the sun was just rising and of course, the DJ was pumping (there is absolutely no concern for noise or disturbing neighbors here in Nice). As they swam away they began to look like little ants bobbing along in the ocean. The maximum time to complete the swim is 2 hours and 15 minutes. Sadly for a few, they were still swimming when we went back at 9:00am for my Iron Girl run.
The Iron Girl run was nothing compared to what the Ironman race is! My measly 5km was laughable compared to the roughly 224km the Ironmen athletes covered on
the day! The did the 3.8km swim, then a 180km bike ride through 17 different towns, then a full marathon run of 42.195km, which is up and back to the airport 4 times (surely they could have found a more interesting route, no?).
So after watching them take off at 6:25am, then having breakfast, doing a 5km run, hitting up our local café, spending 4 hours on the beach, napping on the couch and going back to the local café, the first athletes were finally finishing! Nearly 10 hours later!!! Watching them cross the finish line was a truly moving and very emotional experience!! Some crossed with their wives and children, some virtually collapsed and others cried. It was incredible! And very motivating! Perhaps one day the coveted words will be directed at US…. “You are an Ironman”......????
