Right now I feel very much for appreciating the good things, the simple things in life.
Yesterday, All Saints Day, being Sunday too, seemed liked it going to be pretty quiet everywhere. Nevertheless we went to the train station to see if we could check out Eze, just east of Nice on the coast. We bought our ticket but the next train was not due for another half an hour. We decided to just wandering outside of the station, and right next door was the tourist office. So we went in to maybe check out boat trips to Corisca, but ended up asking and finding out that the train to Eze only goes to the coast, which is two hours walk from the village. To get to the village, you have to take a bus from the central bus station across town. All the shops are closed everywhere anyway so we are just looking to check out scenery. Studying the train schedule, I see that Beaulieu sur Mer is on the way to Eze, just one stop short. So we decide to go there.
The photos show how beautiful it is. We spent two hours walking along the boardwalk
next the ocean, all the way to St Jean Cap Ferrat and back. A lot of families with kids were doing the same on a beautiful Sunday. And I found a piece of fudge we bought the other day in my purse, so we had a nice little chocolate treat too. Altogether an very laid back Sunday.
Back home we cooked steaks, medium-rare, with string beans and garlic (an established favorite already) and baked fries with super duper spicy mustard (thinking of taking at least a bottle back) and ketchup. Somehow my cooking and improv skills have improved miraculously here. I've never been able to cook steak so successfully before, and without marinating it before hand too. All I did was put some salt, black pepper, and soy sauce on it, then sear in hot pan. I think the gas flame had a lot to do with it. So much better than electric.
Today, it was 90% chance of rain and I woke up to the sound of rain. It looked like it was going to keep on all day and the forecast said the same. However, the train stopped around 9am and I took the chance to
go out for a ran. The ocean looks so different after the rain, much lighter blue, almost an aquamarine, and crashing furiously against the narrow rocky beach. The clouds were lifting and parting, with rays of sun shinning through holes in the clouds. I wish I had my camera. I kept my head at an 90 deg angle for most of my jog. =P
Now it has really cleared up, bright and sunny. All this from expecting all day of rain and staying home just a few hours ago.
Another bonus, finally managed to get rid of the mosquito that lived in our bedroom and bite me like in ten different places. Finally got a buzzing free, bit free night o sleep.
So lots of unexpected good things. After rain there will always be sun, and so much the sweeter for it.
