Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

After the Gorges du Tarn we headed west towards Provence. The motorway drive was really quite boring so the ipods were out on this stretch. Our stop off point was the Pont du Gard which is an ancient Roman aquaduct. We learnt about it in Classics at school so it was quite good to see it for real. Funnily enough, it appears to be the teen hangout. There was a rock band playing and there were loads of teenagers sun bathing and jumping off the cliffs into the river. We were so hot that we swam in the first part of [View Full Entry]

Having drunk as much champagne as we could in Epernay it was time to start our journey South....slowly!!! We have no specific route planned and were deciding on the day where to go where to stay and for how long....so long as we were heading south!! We headed for Beaune just South of Dijon in the Burgundy region of wine production and enjoyed a great lunch in Macon overlooking the river. "Jimmy the van" was doing really well and so we decided to head for the French Alpes so turning slightly east we aimed for Annecy just south of Geneve. We [View Full Entry]

Le Lac....Annecy

Thursday continued We had a peaceful evening sat outside, 20°C, a lovely balmy evening again. Pat cooked some pasta and mince beef with a basquaise sauce. Grapes and biscuits for dessert. Friday 17th October, 2008 The plan for today, is to drive in a loop from here westwards, popping to the supermarket first, the road will take us initially inland, then round the coast to see the pampelonne beach where all the celebrities hang out at the private beaches, then up to St Tropez and back to the apartment. Swimming costumes packed just in case! We headed off eventually late morning [View Full Entry]

Saturday, 18th October, 2008 The plan for today is to complete the part of the loop, that we didn't complete today. The day wasn't quite as nice as yesterday, but still lovely. We started at the supermarket to get our lunch and dinner. Then headed clockwise on our loop, through Saint Tropez and south down the coast, then back due north to the apartment. We stopped off at the Pampelonne beach and saw the Club 55, where apparently the celebs go. Didn't seem a big deal, but we only saw the outside. The wind was coming straight in off the sea, [View Full Entry]

Tuesday 14th October, 2008 I have received an email from the owner of the shop in Ypres, The British Grenadier Bookshop, who very kindly said he would try to find out further information about the headstamp on the Trench Art, that I was given, from his reference books. “Here is what the book says... 8mm Lebel ART-D case made in the 3rd quarter of 19?? (you crossed out the number on the right side at the 3 o'clock position) by Atelier de fabrication de Vincennes. Metal case by Compagnie Francais des Metauz, Serifontaine.” The number at the 3 o'clock position is [View Full Entry]

Thursday 16th October, 2008. The plan for today, a walk. We decided that we would try to stay out of the car today, if we could. A lazy morning started the day and I managed to get access to the internet, and caught up with publishing the blog and some email correspondence. Spotted a spiders web, sparkling in the sunshine and tried to photograph it. Eventually we set off for a walk in the general direction of Cogolin Town. We started by walking around the back of the apartment complex to see what there was of the pine forest. But after [View Full Entry]

Day 5 is what happens when you don't follow the advice I have been giving out. I woke up around 2pm and went down to the pool. I got a perrier and a lounge chair. I spent an hour or two lying in the sun reading the Herald Tribune (mostly articles about Russia/Georgia) and took a quick dip in the pool. After I went down to the Spar in town, which is configured as just a plain small supermarket not the lovely all purpose store we had enjoyed in Ireland (sorry Kev, no breakfast baps). I got a large bottle of [View Full Entry]

With the crushing hangover of the previous day fresh in my mind, I was in no rush to throw myself back into circulation. I slept until probably 3 in the afternoon and was planning on a final low key day before heading to Monte Carlo the next morning. I went down to the pool, grabbed a perrier, the herald tribune, a lounge chair and settled in for a boring afternoon. In a nearly unprecedented move, clouds started rolling in and I was shocked when it started to drizzle. It NEVER rains on the Riviera in summer and it is rare that [View Full Entry]

I was beyond surprised to wake up around noon on Saturday hangover free. It had now been 3 nights of going fairly hard with day drinking and I was getting up from a maximum of six hours of sleep. Camille, Constance and I assembled around the pool with much perrier and still water. Camille called Solene and asked where she was she said something like "St. Tropez, of course..." When she called back 20 or 30 minutes later Camille asked Solene why she didn't just call for a cab. At this point we learned that not only did Solene shack with [View Full Entry]
