Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

I left my friend Kevin at the train station and met up with my 2nd couchsufer, JD. He picked me up in his company car and took me back to his place. For a living, he drives up and down the French Riviera stopping at ports and selling mostly wines to cruise ships. I'm sure tonight ill be drinking well! He makes his own schedule so had plenty of free time to hang and talk with me. Cool job, huh? His place was small but cute with huge windows looking out over the park and the ocean. It was a bit [View Full Entry]

Hi Just a quick entry, the internet is hard to get onto at times and we don't have long today. We just arrived in Cannes, it is beautiful! Going for a quick swim soon before heading off to our hotel near Nice, then to Monaco to hit the casino tonight. Spent the last two nights at a chateau in county France (can't remember the exact name!). The first night was party night, theme 'Bright and Tight', we had lots of fun with that. Second night turned into party night again, them 'Pimps and Pros', Amy and Amy went as pimps and [View Full Entry]

After spending the day in Cannes at the beach and shopping we went to Monte Carlo for the evening. The drive was stunning, Monaco is absolutely beatutiful, and so ritzy! We walked around the palace and then headed to the Grand Casino. Unfortunately it was closed because there were big celebrations all around as it was the day that Prince Albert officially became prince. So we went to another casino, equally as stunning, and sipped cocktails overlooking the ocean while the sun set. There were so many big yatchs, ships, boats, with so many wealthy beautiful people. We all sat there [View Full Entry]

I woke up rather late today at 9:30. I was actually very tempted to just go back to sleep or down to the promenade and vegetate all day. In the end though, the "gung-ho" part of my travelling personality won: I'm only in Nice for 3 days, and I'm not going to be stopping at Avignon. In other words, this is it for the French Riviera. Thus, I hauled myself to the train station and got on a regional train to Monaco (€6.5 return). The minute you get out of the train station into the area around Port Hercule, it becomes [View Full Entry]

Well once you see the picture below, we ll save you the trouble and just tell you now that YES, that is Kevin Bacon. And is you saw Bridget Joans Diary you,ll notice Colin Firth was with him also. After leaving Barcelona we headed back into France and we both agree this is one of our favorite spots so far, Cannes and Nice. We loved it here... We again stayed in tiny cabins but they are clean and warm so it works. So again after we arrived we just had some more cheap wine (amanda is slowly getting a taste for [View Full Entry]

We first visit a French perfumery before entering Italy. We see the Leaning Tower of Pisa before we reach this most spectacular of Renaissance cities, Florence. Was so tired when I woke up this morning, which was interesting as last night was probably the least I've had to drink on tour. Had French toast for breakfast, cereal, yoghurt and fruit. Left at 8 and stopped at a French perfumery at Eze, between Monaco and Nice. Had a tour where of the factory where they handmake everything, including the packaging. Saw the leaning tower of Pisa! Was a long driving day, [View Full Entry]

In the navy ...

It's your choice today - perhaps mix with the rich and famous on the beach at Cannes or take a trip into Nice for some souvenir shopping and explore this area. At night, we go to Monte Carlo to see the Royal Palace and visit a casino. Woke up feeling surprisingly well, considering the amount and mix of alcohol I'd consumed. Everyone bailed on going to Cannes, so Melissa and I caught the train there with Lisa, Kristy and George. Canne is an amazingly beautiful town, and I'm so glad I went. It's quite small, with narrow streets lined with [View Full Entry]
