Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Sorry it has taken so long for me to update! French keyboards have the letters all out of place and it is rather frustrating. Anyway, Cannes: playground of the stars, home of the biggest film festival, learning experience for Greg and Nat. We arrived in Cannes with a plan, go straight from the train station to the hostel we read about in Lonely Planet to drop off our backpacks. Then we were going to hit the beach and see where the film festival takes place. We make our way to the hostel, and lo and behold no one is there! Lonely [View Full Entry]

Nat Near the Pretty Park we Spent Our Afternoon In
Our Super Classy Picnic!

Cannes was our 'learning experience.' We arrived in Cannes in the morning, planning to have a full day of sightseeing and then find a hostel in the afternoon. Unfortunately, we didn't realize the Cannes train station doesn't believe in luggage lockers. So, still in high spirits from being at the start of our European Adventures, we decided to tough it out and start exploring with our packs still on. We quickly realized this wasn't our best idea. So, we tried to find the hostel in Greg's travel book. We found it! but no one was answering the buzzer. We took down [View Full Entry]

A day pass for 12 euros lets you go up and down the coast for as many trips as you like in one day. Its good value if you have the stamina in hot and windy weather... I did the below in 10 1/2 hours and was dead when I got back, not to mention the feet.. Grasse - is a hilltop town and one of Franc's leading perfume producers. There are heaps of perfumeries, including 'Fragonard' at the foot of the old town which offers free tours of the perfume production process, a museum of perfume related things such [View Full Entry]

On my way to Tal's hotel, I stopped at the corner cafe and decided to treat myself to one of France's wonderful pastries - une brioche aux raisins. I don't actually know what a brioche is, but it looked like a regular pastry, my guess was that it's made with lots of eggs or something. Either way it was delicious! Tal and I first had to make sure his rental car stuff was done and arranged (him, his dad, and his older sister drove to Nice from Paris). After that, we headed to Gare Routiere for the bus and enjoyed watching [View Full Entry]

Today was a beautiful day! Which sure beat yesterday, which consisted of lots rain and wind. I did get some sunburn on my back and my legs, however. We got into Cannes yesterday evening, and had the hardest time finding a decent dinner because everything seemed to shut down at like 8pm. Our hotel here in Cannes is the nicest hotel that we have visited...except they don't change out your towels everyday (but that is like one minus point out of like 50 pluses). There is a pool in the center of the hotel, and it is just a five [View Full Entry]

Cannes, home of the Film Festival, and today that was quite obvious as the place was a hive of activity for next week’s festival! As you walk through Cannes, you can feel the glitz and glamour ooze out at every corner. But what makes this place and the rest of the French Riviera so great? Is it the French and Italian influenced Architecture? The high mountains behind providing a beautiful backdrop? The clear and inviting ocean? The food? mmmmm yum! I know it not the pebbly beaches. Maybe it’s all this jammed into one, and the steep mountain limiting development, and [View Full Entry]

Today we had a very very long trip to make, 9.5 hours to be precise. Knowing Craig however, he would love the long drive. Heading from Paris to Marseille, we reached Lyon and decided that the extra hour and a half was doable to make it to Cannes. We decided to do this because we had been told by our aussie friends in Paris that there are many argentinian gypsies around Marseille that tend to break into campervans etc, so to avoid any problems we thought we would head straight to where Craig was playing golf in the morning. Today we anchored at Cannes and had to take a tender into the dock. Called “Cane Harbor” by the Romans because of the abundance of reeds in the nearby marshes Cannes today is the center of the French Riviera. We did a tour to Monaco and Monte Carlo. Although less than a square mile in size, Monaco is a sovereign state. In 1308, Genoa sold this tiny principality to the Grimaldi family, which still rules it. We went to the Palace but because the Prince was in residence, we could not tour. We were able to watch the changing of the [View Full Entry]
