Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

A short drive to 'la Croisette' in glamorous Cannes, where we have time to admire the yachts in the marina and go celebrity spotting! We'll see the Film Festival Centre before re-joining the highway to drive through Provençal landscapes reminiscent of Van Gogh paintings. Then on past the Camargue National Park and to the border with Spain. We cross over the foothills of the Pyrenees and are soon in the region of Spanish Catalonia. Past olive groves and vineyards we approach the 'avant-garde' city of Barcelona - a cosmopolitan port on the Mediterranean. This was a long day of driving. I [View Full Entry]

French Riviera August 30 - Sept 8 Our adventures took us from Cinque Terre, Italy to Cannes, France and to a very nice apartment where we will spend the next week with the family including another son who will join us here. On our way to the French Riviera we stopped in Genoa, Italy for a visit to the very nice aquarium there. This is a great place that is said to be the biggest and best in Europe. Worth a visit for sure. The next week was a very relaxing time with late mornings, lots of cards, a few drinks [View Full Entry]

Cannes: Cannes feels sort of like Los Angeles ( California ) with palm trees, sandy beaches, and extravagant cars with a Newport Beach chaser of multi-million dollar yaughts. Being from California, I quickly realized how the Mediterranean has influenced everything Californian. I had noticed this first in Spain , but the influences are throughout the Med. The only thing clearly better in California is dance music, vegetarian food, and Mexican food. The French school Americans in just about everything else. The USA is also better for shopping selection, prices, and electronics [View Full Entry]

Although the alarm is set for 4.00, I am up at 3.30. Realising that I am too excited to go back to sleep, I pull myself out of bed. It is dark and raining. Oh, joy. I turn on Sky News (the BBC, bless them, does not see the need to do international weather). The weather report finally comes on. The perky, blond announcer tells me that although England is doomed to be raining and cold for the foreseeable future, it is “hot and sunny” on the Riviera. OH, JOY! Now, usually when I have flights this early, I take a [View Full Entry]

2006 I went to Cannes by car with some bands and a few friends. The bands were supposed to play (and also did even though many many things went wrong) on a festival by some lake, the gig was amazing, the audience was rather weird (French) but in the end we had a great party and some Frenchies even tried to speak English. An attempt that failed mostly.. After a birthday of our friend at the camping place we were thrown out, so we had to camp by the lake - which didn't lead to any problems. During these 4-5 days [View Full Entry]

good morning!
finally breakfast

The end has come of my time in Cannes. I packed today and I will leave tomorrow night. It's been a great trip, I've met a lot of cool people and been able to visit a lot of places! The film festival was a really cool experience. I saw a total of eight movies. They were all very different, and honestly I would only see a couple of them a second time. My favorite was "La Silence de Lorna" which was from the same directors as "L'enfant" which won the Palm D'Or a couple years ago. I wasn't able to see [View Full Entry]

Linda G planned ahead and booked us a tour of Cannes, Nice, Monaco and Monte Carlo with Dream Tours and it was a really great choice. After tendering to the dock in Cannes, 9 of us piled into the Mercedes Limo for our tour of Villefranche. The tour was booked for 8 of us, but Pam hitched a ride into Nice so that she could find a special restaurant that she had visited the last time she was there. She had been dreaming about it and was lucky enough to find it again and was not disappointed. Fred, our driver and [View Full Entry]

We decided that we'd get up early and try and pack in a full day of sightseeing. We almost got run over about three or four times on our way to the train station in town. The drivers aren't to be trusted, even at zebra crossings and red lights you've got to look twice and it doesn't help that the cars are on the wrong side of the road. Left is right, right is not right. France were having train strikes while we were there which meant angry people and delays. We didn't have it too bad, but it was a [View Full Entry]

The 61st Annual Cannes Film Festival began last Wednesday. It's been really interesting how much the city has changed in the last few weeks! Within two weeks many restaurants had put up additions that pretty much doubled their size. It definitely is turning into tourism season too! It had been getting busier and busier down by the palace where the festival takes place and now it's crazy! Wednesday was the first day of the festival so our school had a meeting about what to expect and how we can see some of the movies. We did get a pass which allows [View Full Entry]

I had a number of visitors the other weekend! It was the very beginning of May and first, Grammy and Papa stopped by during a cruise they were taking around the Mediterannean. That was really nice to see them! I walked down the the port where they were tendered in and found them without a problem. It took awhile for them to be tendered in but the weather was nice so I didn't mind waiting. We ate breakfast at a cafe and then walked back to my school where I showed them where I'd been living for the last three months. [View Full Entry]
