Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Yes that's right - Cannes! Again, visiting Cannes was included in the original F1 trip to Monte Carlo. The Film Festival in Cannes was taking place at the same time as F1, so it was a perfect opportunity to visit it, even though obviously admission was literally impossible. Peter did see some celebrities however and some of the bigger ones such as Pitt and Jolie on the million of screens that were placed outside the venue. Again, as you can imagine, Cannes was absolutely beautiful with lots of expensive cars and yachts, stunning views, beautiful women, VIPs and celebrities... All pictures [View Full Entry]

I met a whole bunch of people at my hostel last night. Which was great! this morning me and Christa were going to go and do the beach...but then we found out that all our friends were going to Cannes, so we changed our minds at the train station and headed there! On the way out we accidentally sat in first class (which is not much different, except for the table). We met up with our friends in Cannes. We must have looked like an interesting group: two Canadian girls, four Brazilian guys and one Irishman. We went to the beach [View Full Entry]

I went to Cannes today. It was awesome! I also went to Antibes which is this beautiful mediterranean city. The best part was having lunch while four Spainish film workers of some sort were discussing stuff. Super cool. I also saw Quinton Tarantino and Juliette Binoche and an official red carpet. I went to the beach in my dress and just hung out there for a very long time. I'm not even burned (that much!). [View Full Entry]

After passing the perma-tanned packed beaches of St. Tropez and Cannes, the first campsite we found was practically on a building site. Either side of it for mile upon mile was nothing but a cheap casino and swathes of harsh pebble beach. After cooking our dinner of tomato and potato stew, washed down with ten of Lidl's cheapest beers, we went out to sample the night life. The night life happened to consist of sitting on a rough built rubble pier, listening to a coach load of Young Americans. Sat in the middle of Europe thousands of miles from home the [View Full Entry]

Nesting Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Cannes
Breakfast this morning was a double espresso and a chocolate croissant. Dinner tonight will be a hunk of aged cheese, a bar of dark chocolate, and a bottle of red wine. Why? Because I am in France. I often ask myself why we pick up certain habits and do certain things while traveling that we would never, ever do at home. I can buy cheese, chocolate, croissants, crusty baguettes and red wine on any corner at any shop in New York City. But I don’t. When in New York, when at home, these foods are eaten rarely and sparingly, and are [View Full Entry]

When a girl finds herself far away from home, in a foreign land, without a car, facing a long bus ride into town, and laden with nearly 500 euro and many heavy pounds worth of bedspreads, sheets, towels and bath mats, what is she to do? Simple: call upon the most contentious yet quintessential of all lessons garnered from her favorite childhood stories. Quickly set out to find herself a Knight in Shining Armor. Or, at the very least, a guy with a car. Today I returned to the illustrious Zone Industrie on the outskirts of Cannes to finish the mattress-shopping [View Full Entry]

A motley crue Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Cannes
I am thinking that the reason the French eat so much bread is because they need something to soak up all the red wine they are drinking. At least, this has become my excuse. After two days of racing the 45-minute walk at a ridiculous pace to get to class every morning, arriving all sweaty and very-frizzy-haired, I finally got smart today and discovered that I could actually take the bus. For a mere 1 euro and a 10-minute ride, I was dropped off directly in front of the school this morning, arriving calm and relaxed and not sweaty, with plenty [View Full Entry]

Piles of sand Europe » France » Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur » Cannes
Today was my first day of school. Last night I carefully laid out just the right outfit, set aside my school supplies and packed my bag with the days essentials. OK, not quite. But it was kind of fun to get up and go to school again after all these years. I signed on for a French Intensive class at the College International de Cannes. The price is exorbitant (300 euros for one week of class) and the location not exactly ideal (a good 45-minute walk from the apartment) but I justified the cost by thinking of it as an investment [View Full Entry]

Sand Castles in Paradise
A true "artiste"
Check out those details!

They are a kind and generous family, no doubt about that. This fabulously stylish woman, her gentle, guitar-playing husband, and their 30-something live-at-home son, all welcomed me into their home and their life without a moment’s pause. I arrived into town, placed a call to these otherwise strangers - friends of a friend - and without hesitation they invited me to dine with them. How could I refuse?! I was looking forward to visiting a French home, and to having a substantial opportunity to interact and attempt communication with locals. I was asked to come over at 7:30 pm. The son [View Full Entry]

The promenade
La Croisette by day
My favorite place to dine

The sun came out today. Not the timid sun that peered through the clouds yesterday, tempting and teasing worshipers with just the slightest hint of its rays. Today, the morning sun blazed through the night sky, releasing a bright new day here along the Cote d’Azur. Today, the morning sun broke through the glass window where I slept, spreading light and warmth into an otherwise cold and lonely room. This is Cannes in November. Here I sit now, in Cannes, on a large balcony overlooking the residential zone, shielding my eyes from this blazing sun as I gaze out into the [View Full Entry]
