Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Last night's dinner was, as predicted, pleasant enough but overpriced. The cheeseboard was, however, sensational. We did get four courses for the money though neither of us could finish the crème brulee. Today was the first cool and not very sunny ride since we left the UK back in early June. It was cool enough to wear gloves, the first time I have worn riding gloves since Italy on the way out. I have learnt that after almost 4 weeks of sweating into leathers that any clothes worn under them are no longer fit for wearing afterwards. I am going to [View Full Entry]

France is originally named after the latin word francia which means land of the franks. there are many theories to the origin of the name but they all have to agree on one theory one day. Compiegne Europe » France » Picardie » Laon
Tuesday 1st October, 2008 The plan today was to move from Saint Quentin to Compiegne. The journey was a little longer than we have been completing, we filled up with petrol first thing, only our second time since arriving. Drove through all the minor roads, which we prefer to do, you get to see the sights that way, rather than just hammering along the main roads. Stopped at a French Military Cemetery at Cambronne-Les- Ribecourt 2100+ mainly second world war. Laid out in circles, very few flowers. Our first planned stop was the Chateau de Compiegne, which Pat had found in [View Full Entry]

Saint Quentin Europe » France » Picardie » Laon
Tuesday 30 September 2008 A rainy day in France - sadly. Anyway, the plan was to visit Amiens Town, then Peronne, then American Memorial at Bony and then on to Saint Quentin. Found our way into Ameins and a town centre underground car park, we are definetly getting better at the driving and finding our way around. We only had one car beep at us today. We had a quick coffee at the first place we came to, Le Carlton. Strolled around the town for a short while, found the tourist office, for the city map etc. It was drizzling so [View Full Entry]
