Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

My sister’s birthday! She is 20 today…WHOA. So old. I had two classes today. I LOVE my 1030 class, there is only 5 of them and we get to talk so much! I am really going to get to know them and they all get so many more chances to talk. We did a “Becoming American” exercise where I asked them to imagine being an American. Their answers are so funny…they choose such typical American names, say they will eat at McDonalds, and of courses they are all rich and live in Los Angeles or New York! My afternoon class was [View Full Entry]

I only ended up having 2 classes today, even though normally I will have 5 hours of classes on Thursdays. One of my classes does not start until after vacation though. I haven’t minded not working all my hours yet…..but soon I will be haha. Classes went good. I had a new group of students, about 17 of them, who are my age. I was afraid at first, very afraid. There is a program that is like university except the students take some of their classes at the high school. So voila, I am teaching students who are around my age, [View Full Entry]

To French market, to French market.
To French market, to French market.
By the local food market near me.
Just wanted to show you all how French I've become. Look at my photo, a baguette! And I'm carrying it in a reuseable bag that all the stores sell and then you bring it back to use again and again! Woo hoo! Also, I'm happy to report that I had a productive day in France, perhaps my first full one! Things actually went in my favor! I got my pre-long stay visa card, I paid my electricity bill, and I got homeowner's insurance! So, that's about all to report, just a quick hello! xoxo Cara [View Full Entry]

4 years <3 Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire » Angers
Ryan and my anniversary today! 4 years. I miss him more than ever today, of course. Only 2 months and 9 days until I see him again So this work week I will actually work more than like 4 hours like I did last week. Let me try to explain for how the schedule is set up. I work a total of 12 hours per week, but I have around 16/17 classes that I teach, I am still not really sure! The reason it is so many is because many of the classes come only once every two weeks. It makes [View Full Entry]

First official night out in Nantes
First official night out in Nantes
Trying to capture the essence of my state at that point
Hey everyone! It's just a lazy Sunday, a beautiful one at that, here in Nantes, France. Nothings' ever open on Sundays, so I've done a lot of lounging today while I downloaded yoga and tae bo videos (gotta love Billy Blanks), did an ab and buns one, and just got back from a jog, it felt really good to just release some energy in this great weather. Haven't dont too much this weekend, Friday night we had a bunch of people over to our apartment and had several bottles of wine amongst us and then went out to a couple bars [View Full Entry]

France love Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire » Angers
Last night I went over to Maury’s apartment in centre ville which is right in between the bars called L’abbaye and James Joyce. It’s a perfect location! We were drinking some wine and then Annie and Hannah came over and joined us. We then met up with Lydia and Marty, and some new girls we met last night, Katherine, and Laura who was from Seattle. Our goal for the night was to try out some different bars since we always find ourselves back at Falstaff, which we love so much. We went to the Inish Moore which is down the road [View Full Entry]

These past couple weeks have been amazing. Today is exactly two weeks in France. A lot has happened since then. I feel like I have known my friends here forever and already don’t know what I would do without them! I started teaching on Monday. I had two classes Monday, where the professor was present and the students all asked me questions about myself. The students in these classes were about 16 and 17 years old, like Junior in high school. I was really intimidated and nervous before I began, but the students are really interested and actually very nice and [View Full Entry]

Okay, its been about a week and a half in france. A lot has happened in the past week! I actually have some friends now, lots of them, from everywhere. Assistants from Australia, United States, England, Ireland, Jamaica, and Spain! And of course lots of French people. However the first couple of days I knew nobody except my roommate, Eva, and since we both can’t speak French perfectly, there is a limited amount of things that we can say to each other. Im really glad she doesn’t speak English though, living with two other people and always speaking French has already [View Full Entry]
