Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

We did general preparation for Noël today; went to the wonderful french supermaret U-March and after to town to look for presents. The supermarket was fabulous, lots of products in french with very yummy looking pictures. I was amazed at the fruit juice, did you know that in France you can buy raspberry, strawberry, kiwifruit etc juices? Like, just that flavour? It is crazy!! Also, they had Orangina, so Michel and Maryse bought two bottles, and also bought my absolute favourite yohgurt! It is difficult to explain, but we eat it plain with sugar. On the top, it is kind of [View Full Entry]

It is not the 25 - 26 hot, relative filled, pudding consuming Christmas for me this year. The french celebrate the birth of christ from the 24th to the 25th, and in my ever-so-wonderful host family the festivities affirmed this. When I woke (It turns out that I actually was very tired - I slept for eleven hours!) Michel and Anne - Sophie left to go Christmas shopping, so I had a little brekky and showered etc. Maryse and I ate lunch together; it was tiny compared to the norm because we were making room for the dinner. (The dinner on [View Full Entry]

At la soiree deguisee, surprise, Boubou brought fireworks! The packet says stand 40m away, but i'm sure this is close enough...
The sun is up and my bed is warm. I get up and gingerly shuffle into the kitchen and have breakfast. The others are up now. I am lazily stuffing my things into my pack. Nearly ready to go…Nearly ready is violently shoved into running out the door when Maxi tells me my tram arrives in two minutes. ..F@&%…I grab my bags and stumble down the stairs running as fast as I can. I get down the street…no tram…I made it. I double over to catch my breath and remember…my passport, on the table in Maxi’s apartment. Bag in hand I [View Full Entry]

Another day, another strike. I am not joking. Anne Sophie, Sarah and I left for school today and marched with hundreds of other students to protest the new legislations in France. I am having difficulty understanding what they actually say, but I think that they will not make the public sector worse and make life better for the rich. The legeslations were passed and are not popular at all, and the teachers support the kids not going to school. It is all very interesting for me. FOllowing more chanting and marching, I went with Anne-Sophie to her friend Kevins house for [View Full Entry]

Vraiment charment

When I wake up in the morning here, I trot down the stairs and into the kitchen, and generally eat some <Country Store> (like muesli), coco pops (which are more chocolatty here and hence better) and some bread with jam. It is pitch black, and Maryse and I have a nice chat. I speak to my host parents in French, and my host sister addresses me in English (I respond in French.) This way wse both benefit from me being here. I don't mind this at all, which is a surprise cos I though that I would, but I spend so [View Full Entry]

Early Vacation Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire » Nantes
Hello everyone! Good news: my computer virus is gone, thanks to my friend Dan! Well I'm writing you from my bed because I haven't gone to work since last week! My students are on strike! They have blockaded the entrance to the school and refuse to enter until, well lets just say that they somehow coincidentally chose the week before Christmas vacation and probably won't enter until the next semester. I have to say, I think this whole striking thing for the students is ridiculous, but I'm getting an extra week of paid vacation! This past weekend while Lauren and April [View Full Entry]

Outside my school during the strike

Wednesdays are short in France, they finish classes at about 12 and have lunch at the school. I left for school with Roxane, and we waited at the bus stop in the dark before I realized that I has forgotten my wallet, and hence my bus ticket. It was extremely embarrassing, and awkward, but Roxane was really good aboutit and bought me a day pass. Nevertheless, I was still heaps devo at myself. The thing I am really loving about France now is the way the guys dress. It is so awesome! For example, wednesday morning on the train, the guy [View Full Entry]

En ville
Kebab King

As the title would allude to, Monday was a fairly low key day. I went to my new school, Lycée Marguerite Yourcenar with Maryse, and paid for my lunches. She had difficulty leaving her school as right now in France there are huge student protests happening. It is crazy. The students blocked off the front of the school that Maryse teaches at, and had a bon fire with a car tyre burning in the middle situated in the driveway. The smoke from the bonfire was dark, dark grey and really thick. My school is fairly normal, and is situated near to [View Full Entry]

I was meant to have my first day at school today, but the student protests literally blocked off the doors of the school and so instead we went to a nearby cafe and had hot chocolates, Roxane and two of her friends. We got to school via her mother and the tram, which was built in Le Mans just two years ago, and is very good. While we were in <The Coffee Club> having drinks, a group of students walked past, so we ran outside and joined them. We spent the next few hours walking in the heart of Le Mans [View Full Entry]

Bonjour to all! I'm just lounging around the apartment listening to Christmas music while doing some gift wrapping etc. I just got home from babysitting which went really well and I hope I continue to get gigs like that to earn a little pocket cash. It's been a long time since I've babysat, having that plus teaching in a high school, I sorta feel like I'm in high school again! Who woulda thunk it? Anyways, this week has gone well so far, fast too. Monday I took a field trip with my school as a chaperone for the science students. We [View Full Entry]
