Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

I have so much to update you on! The Market So for the past two Saturdays, Haley-Marie and I have gone to the market. For those of you who are from the 'true' south and have been to a flea-market, please raise your hand. It is very similar to a flea-market, but it is in its own completely different. The typical idea of the Saturday market and a flea-market are in essence the same. With that said, this market is huge! It spans many city blocks and streets. Every Saturday there is a large market next to the Jardin du Mail [View Full Entry]

So it's been exactly one week since I've last written, and so much has happened! Last Saturday, Amber and I went to the outdoor market just down the the street. It's held every Saturday morning in the same place, and locals bring everything from funky smelling cheeses to antique livres. It's really cool. I was so mad that I didn't take my camera...the colors, textures, and shapes were incredible. Except for the meat and seafood section...gross!... Anyway, rest assured I will go back tomorrow. And yes, with my camera. On Sundays, very few places are open. Even the vast majority of [View Full Entry]

Eve of the BF Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire » Nantes
Hey everybody, hope all is well! Well I thought I would write a little note to say a temporary farewell as I embark on my 3rd vacation since beginning work! I will be getting up at 3:45 tomorrow morning to catch a 5:30 train to the airport in Paris to meet Nick! I cannot wait! We'll be in Paris for 3 nights, Munich for 4 nights, and Milan for 4 nights. So, I will be at the mercy of internet cafes since I decided not to take my laptop on this trip, it's too much of a burden to carry around. [View Full Entry]

Bon Voyage Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire » Angers
Le Voyage So I began my departure about a week in advance of actually leaving. This is because of course I had to say the dreaded 'see you in about 6 months.' So, a few of my good friends and I went out to an art showing that was for D. Yaghjian and some others. We had an amazing time. About a week later I was driving off to Atlanta. Right as I was parking the car I began to shiver, but I wasn't cold. I was just very nervous. I always get that way before I fly. I'm surprised that [View Full Entry]

So, Amber and I have been here for about 4-5 jours at this point, and I can honestly say I've enjoyed every minute of it! Jeudi morning, we went on a tour of the campus where we will be diligently studying these next few months. It was definitely a bit bigger than I expected. I mean, it's not a huge campus at all...just about the size of CC's campus maybe. But I don't know...it just doesn't look that big walking up to it. Anyway, it seems as though all of the buildings there have some historical note attached to them, which [View Full Entry]

Hello to you all, I hope this day finds you in good spirits. I'm currently sitting once again in the teachers' lounge after being told five minutes ago that I would not be taking the students at 10, it's becoming a normal thing, so I figured I would write my blog and do some more trip planning! The end of January has come and gone, it was not very eventful, considering I was quite poor after buying tickets and tours for my upcoming vacations. Last Wednesday, the girls and I (that includes John of course) went out on the town since [View Full Entry]

Hello all! So today is my first full day in Angers, and I must say...I don't think I ever want to leave. So yeah, the first few days are always the most exciting. I know. But I think a study abroad experience, or any experience for that matter, is what you make of it. For example, this morning was FREEZING. And bien sur it just had to rain when I had to walk to the university. But you know, I loved every minute of it. Well...maybe once my body became numb to the cold at least! Ok, so let me start [View Full Entry]

bqck to using an english keyboard, so i apologise for any inconvenience When I woke up on tuesday, I said a final goodbye to maryse and finalised packing. Michel was going to take some stuff that didnt fit to the post office and mail it home for me, so the actual task wasnt too bad.I woke up really early in the morning, probably not my greatest idea, as I had heaps of time to think after I finished packing. We had heaps of time, so Michel took ;me to the boulqngerie for one last treat. I got a tarte aux pommes. [View Full Entry]

Leslie (from Canada) and I at our favorite little bar, the Corneille
Well it's been a while. Other than being incredibly excited to get Bush out and Obama in, nothing much has happened. Work has been the same minus starting some new classes this week and losing some old ones. I really love my new students, they are so much more receptive to me (it could be perhaps that I've learned from some mistakes! oh well!) and I'm really excited to see what all they can accomplish this semester. My school still continues to forget to tell me about cancellations and what not, I'm starting to be desensitized to their apologies.... oh well. [View Full Entry]

I managed to get to bed at 2, which was slighly earlier than Antoine and Anne-So, who managed to keep their eyelids open until 5. When we woke, we had a brunch with Michel's grandson, and it was bacon and eggs, meat, tomatoes, fromage and bread followed by crepes. Magnificent. Considering we were up heaps late, we left for Chambourg late too. I guess the difference with my biological, australian family and my host family is illustrated in the fact that we left fifteen minutes late. Very amusing for me. My fam had wanted to take me to a house in [View Full Entry]
