Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Bonjour monsieur!
Paris

Under complete duress we now have to leave France for a few months. It has come around far too quickly and we really do not want to leave here. The countryside, towns, food, wine, weather and people - French and other - have all been wonderful (a few minor events aside). We truly believe that this area is going to make a great home. A recommendation to any campers, caravans or chalet hirers - we are leaving one of the best sites we have ever been on. We have been living in a tent now for nearly 3 months and I [View Full Entry]

By 4:30, we were traipsing around the François I hunting Chateau, Chambord. The famous façade is highlighted by its four monumental towers, and the gardens and forest surrounding the palace number more the 13,000 acres. The chateau has a beautiful terrace which provides 360 views of the gardens, a Louis XIV apartment and a double corkscrew staircase, (I think it is a D’ Vinci design) allowing Renaissance guests to ascend the grand staircase without ever meeting descending quests. After our visit on the interior and short walk around the grounds, we decided to view the palace from the [View Full Entry]

Rowing in th Moat

We slept through breakfast and checked out about 11:30. After we explored our own chateau, it was time to find a cappuccino, a baguette and explore more chateaus. Our first stop of the day was Chateau Chenonceaux. This remarkable castle has a tangled history of love and betrayal. It was given to Diane de Poitiers, mistress to Henri II. Diane’s power over Henri’s heart infuriated his reigning queen, Catherine de Medici. However, after Henri died during a joisting tournament in 1559, Catherine had Diane thrown out of Chenonceau. , Inspired by her native Florence, Catherine add [View Full Entry]

Loire Valley Castles As I leave tomorrow for our Ireland/Scotland/England vacation, I wanted to update this with my pictures from this past weekend!! So we boarded the bus at 7:45am (you can imagine my excitement at 7:45am) - but in French time, it was more like 8:15am before we got moving. The weekend would be usually half an hour behind when we were to be doing things. Anyways, it would be a 4 hour drive to our first destination: Chenenceau. I spent most of the ride there chatting it up or listening to my music and staring out the window. We [View Full Entry]

on top of the castle in angers.
The day after Christmas, my mom and I headed off to Angers, where I studied abroad for a semester in 2003. It was nice to show my mom where I first lived abroad. We had a lot of fun in Angers...although we decided that we shop more in small towns where there isn't a lot to do! We also went to Saumur during out little stay there. Saumur is a really small town about twenty minutes from Angers on a regional train. It's quite a beautiful city. Enjoy the pictures! [View Full Entry]
