Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Class Day 2 Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire
Well, those promised pictures may have to wait another week while I catch up on my classes. Today I had Introduction aux Méthods et Théories Critiques, first the TD and then the CM. The TD went well- the professor speaks very quickly but I understood her well and she was very nice when I talked to her after class and asked if I could use a tape recorder. She asked how well it worked and said if I needed to we could set it up on the podium right in front of her. I honestly don’t know how much I’ll use [View Full Entry]

I promise these will be more interesting and include pictures once I get the internet set up in my dorm! (Hopefully soon, just turned in the paperwork). Thursday morning we met with Jeffrey to pick out classes. I honestly missed ISIS. Because I’m taking classes across disciplines and levels, the scheduling is insane (to say nothing of figuring out what it will all do at the UA). For French students, the department has a pre-determined course schedule for each year so I is all nicely planned to fit breaks and lunch etc. Well, I think I’ve finally got a schedule picked [View Full Entry]

Whew it's been a long week. Monday we woke up early and went to the University to get my room. First we took a number and then we went in to buy insurance (the reason I couldn't get my key Friday). I got really confused because the girl was asking if I had social insurance and I had no idea what that was. But we finally figured it out and now my room is insured against all accidents and theft and if I should break someone or something, I've got me some social insurance to cover it. Then we got in [View Full Entry]

After I finally woke up we went to the train station to rent a car but couldn't because we hadn't reserved one. I was glad about this because Sarah's mom didn't seem terribly confident about driving. So we took a taxi back to the mall to get things we'd need for the dorm. Only we forgot the name of the mall so we said "centre commerical" and near Toys 'R Us (the only store we could remember). The driver was very nice and drove us to Toys 'R Us and then across to the mall when we realized where we wanted [View Full Entry]

Bonjour mes amis! I've arrived in Le Mans and jumped right in. First, the trip. Not exciting but I'll tell you all the same. Left Tulsa at 7 am central and slept all the way to Newark where I enjoyed a nice oily slice of NY style pizza I've been craving. Bought internet access for the 7 hour layover and visited my sis. Finally boarded for France and was moved so a family could sit together. I sat my two Canadian women who weren't terribly friendly but who took a valium and put on a face mask before we even hit [View Full Entry]

Sadly, many bugs had past during many a coughing fit while pedaling about. I think the two that top my list are the above butterfly and a lizard. Their passing was not on the same day. But I did have a butterfly collide with my nose and well, noses come with nostrils. I was slighty horrified by the event as I sputtered for a bit. On another day, we were cycling in a row, I was last with Amie right infront of me. She and I saw the lizard's attempt to cross the roadway, it missed a car then hesitated as [View Full Entry]

I think I'm finally used to these darnded bike seats. It helped to switch bikes with Amie a few days ago. Apparently my legs are longer out of the two of us. Today the path was quiet but hilly (or undulating if you prefer). Our first coffee stop was overlooking the Loire River. Just down from here was a set of pirate ships. Okay, maybe not ships that sail up and down the Loire pirating all tourists that venture near the waters edge, but these were old wooden ships with masts. A person with a wooden leg and a parrot would've [View Full Entry]

Our pattern of coffee stops as turned into somewhat of a tradition. After the briefing of directions, our group would quickly figure out where we could stop for coffee. Then at every coffee stop we got capinos from Susan who carried a bag around with her :) Our first stop was a tiny place called Chapelle Aux Naux. Its only attraction is its castle that has a wooden draw bridge. The wooden draw bridge is put down every morning and drawn every night to this day. Then we continued to Villandry. We had coffee in Villandry before heading up to [View Full Entry]

Today was our "long" cycle. We were cycling 54miles to get to our next city, Azay De Rideau. Despite its distance, it ended up being the most enjoyable ride yet. Another beautiful sunny day, by midday the sun was burning our backs. Luckily large parts of our trail were through forest. Our group of 13 split up into two groups and we cycled in a group of 7 (the slower of the groups). We stopped for coffee in a pub full of locals in one of the villages along the way. Then lunch was at a campsite along a relaxing little [View Full Entry]

It was a relocation day where we cycle to the next city we will be staying at, and our belongings get shuttled there by van (yay! No carrying backpacks!) It was a gorgous day and we cycled along the river Cher for most of it. About an hour out of Montrichard we came to Chateau Chenonceau. I'd heard all about the chateaus of the Loire Valley, but it still surprised me how stunning they are. This one had a garden that could compete, maybe even beat, Versaille. It said on the sign in french that there was a student discout [View Full Entry]
