Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Well, I finally woke up about noon Friday. Convinced myself to get out of bed about 1 and went to run errands. I found the bus I needed to take to get to Auchan - the Walmart-esque store in the shopping center. I got off a stop early to check out a sporting goods store, but no frisbee. Then I found a shoestore "Chausserland" (Chausser- shoe) that had some cheap shoes, but I hadn't been to an ATM yet so I'll go back for those probably this weekend. Finally got to Auchan and got a straightener (the sales people were really [View Full Entry]

Well, it's finally Thursday which is pretty much Friday though as long as Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday are it always feels more like Sunday of next week. I got an early start on Monday and tried to go talk to Jeffrey (busy teaching) and read for my Roman History class. The books are in the library and you just go read assigned excerpts. I finally found the books (oops forgot that 2nd floor in Europe means 3rd floor to an American!) and read some until I got hungry and then went outside to eat my sandwhich and head towards centre ville. My New Haircut 2

This morning I rested a while and once I felt better Sarah and I went in search of a park I'd found online. We made it to the first stop pretty easy but missed the second as we didn't know that end of town well enough to request the stop on time. But we got off a couple stops down and walked back and eventually found the park. It was a cute little park with lots of paths, a few kids areas and some pretty flowers. Lots of nice green space which I think Sarah especially enjoyed, as she's missing all [View Full Entry]

Bonjours!! So we are finally at a computer where we can take our time and enjoy everything. Yesterday we arrived in Angers, a small city in the Loire Valley, and we are staying with a friend who Josh works with's parents. They are so wonderful, making dinner for us and showing us around this adorable little city...but shall we retrace our adventures from the past week?? Biens Sur!! We had an amazing time in Amsterdam...which by the way, seems to be abbreviated XXX...not surprising after having a look around. Although a little pricey, we had the most wonderful accomodations at a [View Full Entry]

Well, I read and read and read some more. Tuesday I had classes again- Geography and 18th century lit. I did pretty good at following for the most part, but was confused about how they wanted the writting set up in the geography TD. But the girl who does the TD (a 3rd year student) is very nice and also offered to email us her notes from each week to help (there isn't a book for the class, just a book of demographic charts to analyse each week). Tuesday was also Sarah's birthday. The buses were on strike Thursday-Tuesday. They ran [View Full Entry]

A brief update: After much frustration and googling and translating technical terms in French, it became apparent that MSN messenger and I were not meant to be friends. So we tried Skype and voila! I could see my daddy and my mommy and my PUPPY and they could see me. Oh the wonders of the internet. SO, if you have a video phone/webcam and would like to talk sometime, Skype is free to download at www.skype.com . My email for it is rlw03@uark.edu Also, I got a care package from home with my DVD player reload cd so I can watch [View Full Entry]

My weekend

I am writing to you today straight from my very own dorm room. This post will be brief as I still have much reading to do, but if I get a lot done than tommorow I'll have some photos at least of the dorm and campus up. Well, Friday there was a strike so I finally got into town to get my books about 2:30 after waiting an hour on the bus. Luckily going back wasn't such a long wait. For all my books the grand total was 50 Euro. That's right- a semester of books for 50 E. Most books [View Full Entry]

Well, yesterday was my 3rd and last day of classes for the week. Classes don't start until 11 on Thursdays which is nice. I have Latin first so I left early to scope out the building. Instead of saying Kimpel 101 some of the buildings have their own name and then a name for each room. The schedule of course only gives the room name but luckily it didn't take me too long to find Salle Ulysses. I ran into one of the Czech girls on my way and she has the class too. We stood outside the room up until [View Full Entry]

Classes! Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire
Today was the first day of real classes for the semester. I finished picking out classes Monday and those may yet change (as I’ll explain later). First things first: I’ve now seen 3 bunnies on campus! That was really neat since I saw bunnies all the time at home walking my dog and on campus at the UA. So, back to Tuesday. I got up really early to eat breakfast and stop by to buy tokens for my laundry appointment (yes, you also have to make appointments for laundry!). That took only a minute so I walked with Val and Leanna [View Full Entry]
