Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

A Time to Learn. Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire » Nantes
It is funny that I happened to pass by this building a second time par hasard (by chance). It is the old site of where copper apprentices would go to learn in this area. When I first saw it, I was told that these apprentices would travel throughout France, learning from all of the great masters. Upon their return, the apprentice would make a master creation, using what they learned along the way, from all of the people they met and helped them along the way, and turning all of the practice and knowledge into a unique style they could call [View Full Entry]

On Monday, August 28th, Yves (my main source of information and good welcoming to France) and I rented a car and hightailed it all the way to the the region called Brittany (La Bretagne). From the little yellow matchbox car in the lot, I knew it would be a fun day! As it cost extra to have a second driver, and as Yves is as much in love of control as any teacher on this planet, I was not able to drive. We played with the car at first since the doors were automatic sliders, and the interior looked like the [View Full Entry]

I hate COUPONS! Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire » Nantes
Please read this and realise that I am not dumb. I am trying a little H-U-M-O-R! La Rentrée des professeurs As in the states, back to school is done in several steps. For me, this meant that Friday, September 1st was my first day. (Actually, I had already met the leaders to get acquainted with the administration and the building. At this meeting, I was told that the community is very demanding, that the students have a lot of pressure, and that the school is well-known. I felt like I was in Pleasantville. I already knew that the match between the [View Full Entry]

Detention

Hello everyone, Things are very busy (but fun) over here. Since my last post, I've done quite a few things: visit 5 castles, visit a boulangerie, been invited to eat dinner with a older French couple, experienced a French family reunion, and done lots of planning for our Rome trip (we leave today). In this special Halloween edition, I'll do my best to get you all caught up before my Rome trip takes over the blog. A few weekends ago, IES piled us all into some tourbuses and drove us to the Loire Valley to see the chateaux (castles). What with [View Full Entry]

Well, another school week came and went without much worth reporting after the Roma plans. But on that front, we rented an apartment right between Campo dei Fiori and Corso Vittorio Emmanuelle. That means minutes from the Vatican and Forum areas, right near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona AND right across the river from Trastever, yards from Primo and the study center... basically the best place ever. Thursday after French class Ruth made curry which was yummy and then she and I and Leanna, Sarah, Fiona and Alix all went across the street to McKinley's for another one of those campus [View Full Entry]

Yum...

Granted, I shouldn't be writing this. I should be either a) studying for my grammar midterm that's going to kick my butt, b) studying for my sociology midterm that's really gonna kick my butt, or c) studying for my art history midterm of which i have no idea what to actually study. But really, since my family here just got WiFi, I now have constant internet access. Thus, lots of useless distractions. So it's going to be another week-long recap because I don't know how to sit down each week and get this all down. Nor, at this point, do I [View Full Entry]

I can hardly believe it's the middle of October! Dad comes in: Yeah!!! Well, I've kept busy. Classes went fine last week and then Thursday evening Sarah and I met with Jeffrey Hopes, our advisor who is an English professor here (from England originally). He had to stay in town Thursday night (usually commutes from Paris) for late meetings Thursday and early ones Friday. So we went to an Irish pub called McKinleys to catch up on how things were going and just generally visit about France. Turns out (not surprisingly, if you've seen many French films) Woody Allen [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! As always, I've had an eventful time since my last entry. My classes are very interesting; they require a lot of work, but it is incredibly easy to procrastinate because there are rarely any specific assignments. For instance, in The Palestinian Question, we have a few books that cover the material of the class in greater detail. In order to write a paper or complete the final exam, it is highly recommended to read these huge books (the one I've bought is 950 pages). It requires a lot of disicipline to get started on books that are so large [View Full Entry]

A lot has happened in the past two weeks. But I swear I’ve learned to keep it shorter (not short, but shorter). Soooo . . . we : foraged for oysters, found a home in Pornic, all survived the bomb, realized the dead bodies were not on display, successfully scavenged around Nantes, challenged the Marseillais to duel, longed for Chicago-style hot dogs (well, just me) and peanut butter (definitely all of us), were salivated over by wolves, got trapped in quicksand, and found both ends of the rainbow. And it’s all true. Okay, oysters & a home in Pornic : Pornic [View Full Entry]
