Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Hello again, everyone. After being in classes for a solid four weeks (during which time I visited a friend in Angers and started my internship) IES decided it was high time for a break, so I just got back from a weeklong trip to Belgium. At IES, I have a course in French Cinema and one about the Middle East. At the Nantes University, I have a history course about the 5th Republic (France’s current system) and I have a sociology course about immigration. I was lucky enough to find an internship with a satelitte office of the Nantes Mayor’s office. [View Full Entry]

Well, picking up where I left off. The flight to Nantes was fine and I got off and walked into the passport area and I hear "Rachel!". I turned around to see Lucy and Helen, two of the Leicester girls, behind me. They'd been on my flight but I went to the boarding gate at the last minute so we didn't notice eachother getting on the plane. That worked out especially well as we shared a taxi to the train station- just like 1 Euro more than the bus and 100% less hassle. I arrived just in time to meet Sarah [View Full Entry]

Again, I'm updating this a week late, but oh well. Wednesday I went into town to meet Jeffrey and Sylvia and Xavier who is hopefully going to the UA next year to talk about campus and such. He is very nice and very excited about the UA, but Sylvia had already warned him before I got there not to bring the UT sweater he was sporting. On the way out I noticed a poster for a "Contry Punk" band from Paris (their spelling error not mine) and I was just TOO curious what that would sound like. So Thursday night I [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone, I had a great time being home for Christmas break. The movie selection on the plane home was excellent : out of the seven films to choose from I watched The Illusionist, Talladega Nights : the Ballad of Ricky Bobby, and the Night Listener. I was lucky that I was able to see so many people while I was back, but I still missed a few. At home, I bought some provisions for the upcoming semester, caught up with old friends, and basically just relaxed. My thanks and congratulations to the Moore family for presenting a spectacular Murder Mystery [View Full Entry]

Bonjour tous le monde!! here are some photos of the trip to Chenonceau that I took with Phil! it wasn't a long trip, just about 45 minutes from Chatellerault by train. The Chateau is gorgeous and right on the Loire. We enjoyed yummy baguettes with Peanut butter and jelly in the castle's gardens. There were not very many people there except a highschool tour group of Americans... can we say "hormonal teens"??? But, we ended up losing the crowds and touring the castle by audio guide. That night, we made a heap of tacos and kicked back for the last supper [View Full Entry]

Well, here it is. Four months spent in an entirely new university, home, city, country. I kept telling myself that I wouldn't miss Nantes that much, that it was just like any other town. On my last walk through the centre-ville, running errands, catching trams, taking the final photos, I couldn't believe how much this place has grown on me. It's absolutely true, what everyone, studying abroad is the best semester. I have so little to say and yet so much. You'll all have to forgive me in the coming months, I've heard there's a bit of a readjustment period, and [View Full Entry]

Today was suppose to be a nice day, consisting of the following: 1. Wine tasting at a little vineyard in the morning (yeah, thats right, drinking in the morning again) 2. Driving to Tours, Cheneceaux, and Blois for some chateau hopping, nice French dinner, and stay at a cute little hotel overlooking downtown Blois. None of those happened and we ended up eating pizza at 11PM at a restaurant next to a roadstop and staying at a Holiday Inn Express somewhere on the road to Paris. Here is how it went down: Wake up at Audes, get the directions for the [View Full Entry]

Hello Friends and Family, I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and didn’t get killed going shopping on Black Friday. I’ve got all sorts of stuff to get you all caught up on, so I’d better get started. Where we last left my travels: Rome. On Halloween day, I took an evening tram with Katie to Paris. The TGV (high speed train) is great to travel with, and I was able to use my Eurail pass on it. With the pass, I can travel as much as I want within 3 countries in 5 days. So we got in to [View Full Entry]

So, one of the most important reasons to come to France is the richness of its culinary history. Although I am no expert, I love fresh food. Just a few blocks away from my apartment is an open air market each Saturday. I took advantage of my first morning by going with a shopping bag Mrs. Martinez left for me. I was quite nervous, not knowing if my French was adequate enough to ask someone for celery root (as I had never asked fot hat item, and I knew that each person has his or her preferred choice of expressions to [View Full Entry]
