Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

There's a few things to see around Nantes while you're enjoying the sun and rain. The drive up to St Nazaire is not all that scenic but when you arrive there's lots of big boys toys to check out. Starting with the freshly made cruise ship the MSC Orchestra, hot of the press so to speak, getting loaded up for it's maiden voyage. Then there's the ship yard where they are building another cruise ship. These things are built in sections and then a crane drops each piece into place. After that it was off to the submarine that they have [View Full Entry]

LA ROCHELLE - 5th May 2007 (Saturday 25º) Wake up at 8:45am. Heavy drapes, earplugs and red wine last night ensure we sleep in - the day is half gone! We wander down to the breakfast area where we are served by a lovely little French woman who is a busy as a blue arsed fly. The room is so quiet that the normal clinking and clanking of cutlery makes you wince and noises that would normally be absorbed (e.g. conversation) bounce around the glass and tile enclosure. Stirring your coffee can be compared in relative decibels to those generated by [View Full Entry]

Well after a few days hanging around the Brittany coast I've come up with a couple of tips 1. When window shopping it's important that you scan the footpath ahead prior to gazing into the windows as you aimlessly wander along the street. This will save you the hassle of becoming bogged in a mound of dog sh** Remember try not to get distracted and keep scanning ahead. 2. I'm not sure if the French invented the roundabout but they sure have embraced it big time here in Nantes. There's the small roundabout, the square roundabout, the two roundabouts side by [View Full Entry]

TOURS to LA ROCHELLE - 4th May 2007 (Friday 20º Sunny in Tours and Sunny and 27º in La Rochelle) Arrive late for breakfast and it is a terrible mistake. There had been a tour bus or two staying in the Hotel overnight and they had hit the breakfast room before we did. The devastation is locust like and complete. There were empty little butter containers strewn hither and tither. The coffee pot was empty and the croissant basket was bare. Seats had been pushed back as though someone had yelled 'abandon ship' whereas I guess it was probably just the [View Full Entry]

TOURS - 3rd May 2007 (Thursday 26º Sunny) Up and at em - for today we go to Chenonceau! But first we seek out somewhere for brekky for I am not inclined to provide the Hotel Turone with one more cent of my hard earned. We find small local café where they dish up two wonderful 3-egg omelettes with the type of aromatic coffee that smells good enough to drag tea drinkers in off the street. We navigate our way 17 kilometres out of town to visit one of the many chateau that are sprinkled liberally throughout the Loire Valley. We [View Full Entry]

PARIS to TOURS - 2nd May 2007 (Tuesday 25º Sunny) Last day in Paris. We walk along Ave de Gobelins to Place d’Italie and find the Hertz Rental Car Office. We have booked a car in order to drive all over France in any direction we wish for the next three weeks. I am not sure how the rental clerk confused Red Ferrari with Silver Blue Ford Focus, but the latter is what we got. We spent some time familiarising ourselves with the controls, but even so, I spent the next three weeks turning on the wipers every time I needed [View Full Entry]

Spring Break Hello everyone, I’m back from my 2 week Spring Break, so I have a lot of ground to cover in this blog. My travels took me to Munich, Berlin, Brussels, Luxembourg City, Strasbourg, Freibourg, and London. Each city was its own unique experience, and I hope I can give you a good idea of their character and strength. Since there’s so much to say, and I don’t want to lose your attention, we’ll try a new blog format… Munich (Germany): Transport to : 10 hour train ride from Nantes to Paris to Munich. Well, Thursday morning I set out bright and early for Nantes to rescue my monkey. I got a free stuffed monkey (see photo below) with my big box of PGtips tea in England and then promptly left him in the hotel in Nantes in February. So I got myself out of bed and onto the 7:22 bus to the station. Nearly left my 12-25 Discount card in my room which would have meant getting to the bus station, turning around and going back to bed. Got a one-way ticket to Nantes so I wasn't commiting to a return time. I [View Full Entry]

And ....castles, chocolate, croissants, consumption… Cheers! Had a great Easter in France with my brother, his girlfriend and some of her mates. We hired cars and drove from London, going via the Eurotunnel from Folkestone (near Dover) to Calais. The Eurotunnel is great - you drive your car in and are in France in 35 minutes (driving on the other side of the road!!). We spent our first two nights in a guesthouse in a small town near Reims, one of the towns at the start of the ‘Champagne Route’. As you can imagine, none of us had any desire to [View Full Entry]

Breakfast feast at the Chateau

As I've been preparing my Spring Break travels (which start tomorrow), I realized that I need to get a blog out before I forget everthing that has happened up until now. I'm pretty good about blogging big trips, but there are all sorts of little events that add up to one blog's worth of info. So here goes... The first scholl day after the Belgium trip, I went to a wine tasting session at IES. The French are very serious about wine tasting, it is even considered a science (oenologie). I went to the same session last semester, but I [View Full Entry]
