Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Sooo...we took our placement tests today. We also can't speak English anymore which is why I'm grateful for this computer right now. Classes start tomorrow after the results are posted. I don't know if you know but the French are CRAZY when it comes to school. As in, they pretty much would rather eat cat poop than get a bad grade. We'll see how this goes. I'm about to leave to go on a walking tour of Angers...should be fun. The weather here is awful right now though...cold and rainy. I'm going to the beach this weekend though! There's also a [View Full Entry]

Well, this morning I said goodbye to Paris for now and arrived in Angers. We took the TGV...the high speed train, and got here in an hour and a half. You would absolutely die to see where I'll be living for the next month. It's basically a convent...okay not really but it is run by nuns!! Real ones!!! When we got to the Foyer Merici, my new home, they actually had coke and cookies waiting on us! Yeah we don't really drink the milk here...yuck. My bedroom is so cute! It is actually pretty big for being a student residence in [View Full Entry]

St Malo is one of those places that I had been told about and somehow managed to miss three years ago on the way up to Mont St Michel. But now I've made it, and am just more then a little pleased about it too. St Malo is a walled city and many moons ago they decided to build a fort that surrounds the city right on the ocean, come high tide the waves crash against the seaside walls. On some of the surrounding islands other forts were built but none as grand as St Malo. There is a nice little [View Full Entry]

We booked an expensive tour in the Loire Valley that had really great moments, good ones, but was annoying in that the tour operator did not treat us fairly. We booked with Off the Beaten Path. They promised 5 gourmet meals, a stay at a grand chateaux, a visit to 7 chateaux and a balloon ride. We got there a day early and stayed at the Hotel Addresse in Tours, good for the money and in the historic district, giving us a very enjoyable day. The pick-up point for the tour was a few miles away at the RR station of [View Full Entry]

Well it had to happen after all these years of being blessed with brilliant weather for holidays. After last years two and a half months away and only three days of rain, my fine weather credits with buddha, god and allah have finally gone into the negative. Yesterday was one of those wonderful days sitting in the sunshine basking and enjoying life around Nantes, today all that has come to an end, so much so that I have been scaning the net in the hope of finding somewhere to escape to to build up the tan before jetting back home. But [View Full Entry]

I thought I was in France
La Cabane is just down there on the right, if you get to the Irish pub have a quick Bushmills and come back.

Da var det tid for fest:-) Så var dagen endelig kommet som vi alle hadde ventet så lenge på.Gaute & Lisbeths Brullup. After a fun filled six days in Ireland it was time to return to sunny Nantes. Which since I've been here has managed to turn on the sunshine once or twice but definately not three times. So with that outlook on the horizonand things being a bit cold, it's time to pack up and fly south for the winter or to jump in the peugeot 206 and drive to the Med or at least somewhere warm on the way. So drive I did, south and after five or six hours in the car and 25 euro in tolls I made it [View Full Entry]

Flying back into Nantes, another sunny day in paradise
On the way
You know you´re near Spain when there´s a bull fight ring

Having a bit of time to kill last night I thought I might go into the city (Nantes) and see what the night life was like, well early evening life anyway. After taking yet another route into the city from where I'm staying, (something to do with my uncanny ability not to navigate around strange cities) I arrived at my normal parking location. From there it was the usual aimless wonder around the city not paying any attention to the map. After a few misguided turns I ended up finding the Irish pub that I was looking for. The thing you [View Full Entry]

Well the French part of the escape continues, after a quick trip up the Brittany coast and back to look at some castles, including a really neat citadel on the coast it was back to Nantes. The bizarre thing about France is that most things are closed on a sunday sort of like we used to have a while back in Australia. The novel experience for today was a trip to a restaurant, not just any old place for a meal this one. The menu has a choice of one thing, steak and fries, that's it steak and fries, the only [View Full Entry]
