Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Yesterday we had a day off from work and so I decided to take an extended stroll to the park. I packed a picnic: bread/cheese/meat, rice, two Smirnoff ices, my book, baseball bat, umbrella, ipod. I spent the afternoon/evening in the parc reading, listening to music, eating, and swinging my bat. As I was on my way home, I passed two teenage boys riding their bikes around a fountain in a smaller park closer to town. I had my ipod on full blast, listening to my music and sort of being in my own little world. Small caviot: I always feel [View Full Entry]

And I so fell in love with this place from the time we stepped on the railway platform, for a moment I felt as if I landed in Mumbai's Victoria Terminus. The city just makes you blend in it. I felt so much comfortable and at home as everything here reminded me of the life in Mumbai. Paris is one of the world's most expensive cities but that doesn't mean a vacation there has to break the bank. There are numerous attractions, sights and things to do in Paris and getting around the city is just a walk away from the [View Full Entry]

This past weekend I went to Angers, France to visit my friend Nissa. She’s studying abroad there for a semester. I was a little nervous about going, considering that I don’t speak a word of French, but most everyone I spoke to during the trip spoke English, which surprised me. People here keep telling me that English is the universal language (and it is a required course in many countries) but it just seems strange to me. Maybe because I never had to learn a language as a requirement, it seems odd that other people would have to learn English. [View Full Entry]

Chinon and Joan of Arc What an incredible area - I think it was once considered to be the play ground of the French Royals and it is easy to see why. They certainly knew how to build some every impressive holiday homes! Chinon was really interesting because of the history connected with Joan of Arc. They are doing a lot of work to restore this particular chateau and I am sure it is a very daunting task. The Joan of Arc museum was really interesting and reminded us of the story surrounding this incredible woman. It is still amazing how [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone, Sorry it's been such a long time since my last entry! Things have definitely picked up here a lot, with classes underway and a few weekend excursions. Let's try to remember where I left off... Since my last entry, I've had three very interesting weekends. The first included dinner at (what else) a creperie, an opera at the Theatre Graslin, a day trip to Mont St. Michel and St. Malo, Pizza Hut, my first church service in France, and lunch with a very classy french lady. Friday night, a few friends and I ate at a creperie before going [View Full Entry]

Guess who's coming to town?! Well what a weekend it has been, but firstly a quick summary of the week. Monday through to Wednesday was the usual Dijon life, classes, going out, and apart from that not generally doing much. But come Wednesday night all of that was to change. Wednesday night maman et papa sont arrive´ a Dijon! I walked down to the train station to meet them and it was just like in the movies, seeing each other at a distance and then waving and rushing to great each other. Wednesday night was spent settling mum and dad into [View Full Entry]

A Couple of Days in Castle Country cha•teau also châ•teau 1. a. A French castle. b. A French manor house. 2. An estate where wine is produced and often bottled, especially in the Bordeaux region of France. 3. A large country house. France really is all about the Chateau experience. Everywhere you go there are signs pointing to huge old castles or smaller, younger (yet still quite old) manor houses, many of which you can actually stay in like a hotel. The castles vary from small stone edifices perched by rivers to huge old fortifications that [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone, It's Monday morning here in Nantes, and I have lots to tell! Last week went fairly well; classes began and all. I went to every class that I thought seemed interesting, except a few classes at the university which don't start until today. Now this week I'll be narrowing it down to just 5 classes. As of right now, I'm taking a french grammar class, Contemporary French Society, Traduction, French Writers and Foreign Nations, Art History, and Litterature d'Enfance. French grammar is...french grammar, and the professor is pretty intense but I'll be learning a lot. Contem [View Full Entry]

Several months have elapsed since my last blog, and therefore our last travels. To rectify this we decided a short trip to the Loire Valley was in order. We flew to Tours (cheap Ryanair flights) and decided to base ourselves there. We arrived in Tours mid morning and aside from a slight hotel hiccup we were soon ready to explore the town. We saw the Cathedral, The Loire itself and various nice squares and buildings. I saw my first château! Tim, having already visited everywhere in France in his youth, had already seen plenty of châteaux but I was impressed. The [View Full Entry]
