Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

Chateau des Ormeau
Chateau des Ormeau
Our home for 3 nights
Heres photos of our stay in the Loire Valley. We visited Chenonceau, Cherverny and the Clos Luce (Leonardo de Vincis final home). We stayed in an amazing Chateau called Chateau Des Ormeau in the Nazelles Negron area close to Amboise. Would highly recommend it to anyone. Loved the Chateaus, just amazing ... Sorry will have to get back to you on these photos, my battery on the camera has died mid stream ... [View Full Entry]

Well, its been a while since Provence. We were meant to be heading to Girona, Spain next but due to a train strike couldn't get there. So we had an extra night in Avignon and 1 night in Carcossone which was lovely with the old medieval city. From there we trained to Toulouse, picked up the car and drove 2 and a half hours north to the Dordogne. On finding our B & B we were amazed how beautiful the grounds and house were "Les Charmes du Carlucet". An english and french couple with two children our age and a menagerie [View Full Entry]

Sophia from Chicago
The "Valley of the Kings" has certainly earned its title over the past 500 years!! Last Thursday, Alliey and I had planned to spend the whole day visiting various castles and the medieval village of Saumur. However, as fate would have it we would not only see some amazing sites but we would make a new friend. While we were at breakfast a girl came sat down at our table. Once she realized that we spoke English we began to introduce ourselves and discuss our plans for the day. Her name was Sophia and she was a French teacher in Chicago. [View Full Entry]

Bonjour from Tours, So much to write, Tonight Tours is holding its Fete du la musique, with all different bands and music being played in different parts of the city. All the bars and restaurants open to the street and everyone wanders from one to the other to hear the different music. It should be fun, its already going strong as I write this in the late afternoon. We have been chateaux hopping in the last few days. It is soooo nice to have the car and the GPS, it really is fun to just get in the little Renault and [View Full Entry]

Bonjour gentlemen and ladies of the court greetings from Tours, France. Yesterday Alliey and I picked up our car....yes we are actually driving in France...and drove to the tiny village of Amboise. Our car is named Mademoiselle Cleo because it is a Renault Clio. So far Alliey has done a great job of driving a stick shift in the area...it helps that we have a GPS system to help us navigate!!! So after we got the car we drove along the Loire River past the village of MontLouis, which is famous for it trodyglote caves. In these caves there are vineyards, [View Full Entry]

what a great little car
SOOOOOO.... I drove a Renault Clio on the french road system by myself, no well actually Miranda was there to be my fearless navigtor. The clio is a very cute little hatchback; ours is a goldish color. All the controls for radio and heat are in picto-grams; of course the spedometer is in kilometers. It feels very weird to go even 70 kmph through a small village. But I remembered my standard shifting just fine, once you learn I guess it really is in there forever. It brought back memories of driving Juup, the little red Geo Metro. The back roads [View Full Entry]

Driving in France
Bridge to Amboise

Written two weeks ago....(sorry for the delay!!) With each coming residency, the intensity of the experience has increased. And this final month in Angers was truly intense. In fact I just misspoke….it was only two weeks here. Less than that, in fact. But it felt like two months to me. We arrived last Tuesday, and we leave this coming Monday. I was gone last weekend to play baseball in Rouen, and I am once again gone this weekend to play. So in fact, I will have only been here for about 9 days!! It seems like so much more than that. I just saw a really great film about a man who is going to die (late-stage cancer) and therefore sabotages his own life. It was a really good film. I really enjoyed it. I had a kind of a bad day—we all did, the whole troupe, and so I spent the day alone just sort of wandering the city. I ended up at the movie theater all alone watching this movie. It was the perfect movie at that moment, because in fact I myself had two days to kill: we had two days off from rehearsal. The event of the movie, [View Full Entry]

oops! Europe » France » Pays-de-la-Loire
Time limit on the comp! I am behind behind behind with these, sorry! Turns out life got ahead of me. I've done several trips since the last blog, such as northern ireland where we went to see cirque du soleil, giants causeway, and did a black taxi tour (where a local shows you around town--the murals etc). Very interesting--especially to see the segregation between the catholics and protestants even after the troubles. There is a wall called the "berlin wall" seperating the 2 roads : shankhill and the falls, as well as a gate that closes between the two at 10 [View Full Entry]

Yesterday we had a day off from work and so I decided to take an extended stroll to the park. I packed a picnic: bread/cheese/meat, rice, two Smirnoff ices, my book, baseball bat, umbrella, ipod. I spent the afternoon/evening in the parc reading, listening to music, eating, and swinging my bat. As I was on my way home, I passed two teenage boys riding their bikes around a fountain in a smaller park closer to town. I had my ipod on full blast, listening to my music and sort of being in my own little world. Small caviot: I always feel [View Full Entry]
