Background: Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state. Nevertheless, France today is one of the most modern countries in the world and is a leader among European nations. Since 1958, it has constructed a presidential democracy resistant to the instabilities experienced in earlier parliamentary democracies. In recent years, its reconciliation and cooperation with Germany have proved central to the economic integration of Europe, including the introduction of a common exchange currency, the euro, in January 1999. At present, France is at the forefront of efforts to develop the EU's military capabilities to supplement progress toward an EU foreign policy.

I've threatened it before, but this time it's true. I've got fond of this TravelBlog site, but it no longer really reflects what I do.... journeys all the way to the veg. patch or Lavelanet market don't really count as Travel with a big T, I don't think. So I've started a blog in Wordpress, called Life in Laroque. Try www.margaret21.wordpress.com if you'd like to have a look. It would be good to hear from you there. [View Full Entry]

Day 55 - 15/11/09 Images that won't be forgotten, That words construed in stories could not depict, That mould ones core into shapes unseen, Raising a glass over conversations of the universe, Smoke rising towards the night sky, This was no sad day, This was a respectful goodbye, An end that buried souls would envy Where the patter of feet was always unseen, The land welcomes this stranger, A deservedly slow process, A goodnight with intentions of a return, For tomorrow you will shine in the sun, For tomorrow you will line each blade of grass, For tomorrow you will be [View Full Entry]

The day is starting out with a thick fog which is probably made worse by the large lake below where our cabin is located. And there is absolutely no wind to blow the fog away so we will hope that once we get on the road and away from the water the fog may lift. The road away from Larche wanders through a mix of empty farmland and forest for a good distance until we crossed over the top of A20 which runs from Paris to Barcelona. We then went onto the D840 and took a break in Martel, another medieval town with [View Full Entry]

Day 47 - 7/11/09 Wednesday this week was my day off and as Vivian (Caroline's helpx) was leaving in two days it was decided that we would both go to Biarritz. After a 6.30 get up and 40minutes at the bus stop we somehow managed to miss the bus (I prefer think that it didn't turn up)...however I'm kind of glad we did! Plan B...road trip! We were kindly granted use of the car for the day and so we set out in search of several places including a fort , a lake and forest in Aignan and a lake in [View Full Entry]

Les Bordes, October 30th, 2009 When I first arrived, I woke to the soft sounds of the curlews chattering in the trees opposite. The next sounds are the voices of our near neighbours. Madame has stentorian tones that echo around the neighbourhood. She waters her pot plants at midnight and cossets two large caged birds that hold great fascination for the many local cats, who admire them with longing glances. When I opened the shutters this morning, I was greeted by the charming sight of a small girl skipping down the road talking to a large black dog, a tiny grey [View Full Entry]

We recently visited Sarlat, which at only 2.5 hours drive from Toulouse, and discovered a typical regional French medieval village. Sarlat has one of the most beautiful open air markets of France, and is reknown for this. Hard to choose amongst all the types of fresh sausages, from duck meat sausage to porc sausage with truffle, or from porc sausage with roquefort to porc sausage with wild mushrooms. So the only thing is to try them all!!!! You have an incredible choice of walnuts all prepared in different ways, truffles, truffle oils, mushrooms, duck liver (foie gras). A truely incredibl [View Full Entry]

Over the course of just 4 days, our glorious Indian Summer has been replaced by the onset of winter. The afternoon temperature in our courtyard has dropped by an astonishing 30 degrees Celsius. Last week’s strappy tops and shorts have been banished in favour of fleeces, trousers and especially socks. The haricot beans, peppers and tomatoes of late summer are losing place on the market stalls to celeriac, knobbly carrots, cabbages and chestnuts. Summer lettuce is giving way to rocket, black radish and the tiny soft leaves of lamb’s lettuce. The pleasure of the fierce afternoon s [View Full Entry]

Les Bordes, 11 September 2009 In the land of Bardot, Deneuve and Tatou and indeed the delicious Madame Sarkozy, it comes as quite a relief to find that here in the countryside; the women are not perfect examples of French chic, in fact quite the contrary. Our neighbours are friendly, offering ‘bonjours’ and ‘bonsoirs’ in passing, but we have yet to engage in conversation - probably a good thing considering our fractured French. The locals are friendly too, so much so that one fell like a stone at our feet when we were having lunch yesterday in Mirepoix. It see [View Full Entry]

Life in the country

Our original intention was to have a very short driving day to Pamplona, stopping at a couple of Rioja towns in the process. But after a chance remark about Lourdes, we looked and saw that we could detour through France, see Lourdes, and proceed through the Pyrenees, seeing Andorra on the way (we realized it was unlikely that we would get another chance to visit that country). It meant visiting Pamplona without spending the night, but that turned out to be a good choice. We started our day with a tour of the Marques de Riscal winery. Our hotel was the [View Full Entry]

Yesterday, the Inspecteur de l’Académie based at Foix agreed to meet a delegation from Laroque today. Francis, one of the two councillors who’s been most involved; 2 parent reps, the dynamic Fatima and Fabiènne; and finally the Mayor, were the ones to go. Could the school have an extra teacher (not to disrupt the class formations again, but to offer supplementary teaching), and what about becoming a ZEP (Zone d’Education Prioritaire)? The troops were called out once again. No, we couldn’t go in to meet the Inspector, but we could be outside to offer solid suppor [View Full Entry]
