Today we head for Millau and Roquefort Cheese country. I thought I was being so smart and headed in a direction that I though was correct; of course I was wrong and had us going to Nice instead. So after our brief diversion and loop around Aix, we were headed in the right direction. We are taking mostly Auto Routes today, because it is about a 4 hour drive to Millau, without any stops. Arles Our first and only stop of the day is in the City of Arles. This city is famous because it is where Vincent Van Gough painted over 200 hundred paintings, including Starry Night and Café at Night. The city is quite old and has several Roman ruins. They are in the process of renovating the larger amphitheatre but it is obvious ... read more

Today we turned our little Peugot south and headed for Millau. Most of the big autoroutes in France are toll roads - and the tolls aren't cheap. The toll for the drive to Millau from Bourges would be €54, and that really only covers the first third of the journey because the rest is toll free. Needless to say, we looked for an alternative route! We found another highway that virtually paralleled the autoroute most of the way, but it meandered a bit through many small towns. It actually turned into a very nice drive and we spotted many chateaus along the way... Some in ruins and some that appeared to be still occupied. The road was quite a bit slower (90 in the fast sections and 30 or 50 through towns; the autoroute is a ... read more

Carcasonne & Albi It’s a warm and sunny day here in Millau, where we arrived today, driving under the 1 1/2 mile long bridge for which it is famous , not only for the beauty of it but it is one of the worlds highest (at 1,115 ft). The drive thru the French countryside was a study in beautifully laid out farmlands in greens, browns and golds. The elevation of the roads on which we traveled, gave us incredible views of valleys and villages deeply sited between steep hillsides (mountains). As we’re writing this, we look up on a cliffside next to the campground, to see 9 colorful hang gliders soaring off into a clear blue sky, hundreds of feet up from the riverside here at the campground. We left Spain on Friday 6/17, headed to ... read more

It was a leisurely drive today, full of excitement and expectations of what we were going to see when we reached our destination of Millau. But first we had one final visit to the town of Carcassonne before we headed off. Adventurers before us had discovered the Otago Rugby Shop in the town and gave us no instructions on how to find it so we wandered the streets hoping to stumble across the shop. We suspect that after the 2010 New Zealand rugby season and Otago’s dismal performance the shop has probably closed down and that’s the reason it couldn’t be found. Leaving Carcassonne we headed northeast towards Millau. The green rolling countryside was similar to that in North Otago, New Zealand. There were vast fields of grain or sunflower plants and roads lined with plane ... read more

Bonjour! Thought Id tell you the shocking news that this weekend not a single drop of alcohol has passed my lips.. and no I will not be making a habit of it! :) Another week of teaching passed, only 2 weeks left now. Friday I had to start at 9 :( but my morning was good, I had lunch at the lycee with Paula and then walked home in the lovely sunshine. Friday night was a pretty quiet affair, I stayed in as we were getting up early to go to the beach. Saturday morning up at 7! We caught the bus to Montpellier at 9 which seemed to take forever as it had added a few different stops, when we finally got there, we got the tram to Port Marianne were we saw a sea ... read more

Bright and early today and off to the view the viaduct, the main reason for coming to this little town, well the National Geographic programme we watched some time ago did not do this massive structure any justice at all. The viaduct is simply stunning and rises from the Tarn river below to soar more then 300 meters high, way taller than the Eiffel Tower, Empire State Building and our own Sky Tower. Pam took some great shots of the Viaduct from so many vantage points that I lost count and then promptly told me that we had to come back at night for some night shots. Ok, so we then headed off to find the stone houses along the Tarn River that Pam had seen, The Gorges Du Tarn seemed like a good starting point ... read more

Very quiet day today, Pam worked Bree and I went and did the grocery shopping, I did the laundry and made a clothesline as this useless campground only had a washing machine and no drier. Spot check: Campground called Camping de deux rivieres is a nice camp site right alongside the river but poor services, rated at 6. Tomorrow investigating places to photograph the viaduct and take a trip over it.... read more

Waking rather shattered after a night disturbed by rowdy French people in the car park outside our camper we headed off to Millau some 350km away. Despite being a little noisy the free camp spot was just great and any other night would be perfect, highly recommended as a camp stop for free. Considering we were going by the back roads as usual the Tomtom told us it was 5 hours we decided to make haste. The first stop for the day was a little river village called Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans where some guys were fishing (without luck it should be added) amongst a stunning walled village rising 50m up above the river bank, the required pics were taken and we proceeded to make further haste south and west. The next stop was to service the camper as ... read more

Monday March 14th 2011 More driving across the hills today, overlooking the Tarn river. We had picked this route to get a good view of the world’s highest viaduct at Millau and were delighted when there was an open visitor centre and viewing point there. It really is a feat of modern engineering and has to be seen to be believed ( though Max was relieved that we didn’t have to actually drive over it ). As the afternoon turned to evening, the weather started to deteriorate. Luckily, we were able to secure a parking spot at a local lamb farm for the night. Before our departure from England, my cousin Anne and her husband Paul had given us the gift of a membership to France Passion. This is a scheme whereby, for an annual fee, ... read more

Morning Campers! Just thought I would give you a cheeky rundown of my weekend antics! Well to start with the last week Ive been keeping myself busy going for long walks and working out with good old Davina Mccall (super body workout dvd) its cracking! Work is... well work, nothing special happening on that front, the teachers surprisingly, are being relatively communicative and telling me in advanced if there are any changes to my timetable which after all this time is abit of a bonus. So lets get to the point this was the BEST WEEKEND SO FAR!!! Dan the assistant who lives in St Affrique (a smaller town near to Millau) came Friday afternoon. It was gorgeous outside so we went for a drink in the sun on the mandarous (the main round about - ... read more
