Carcassonne
The beautiful medieval city lit up at night. It was day one of our road trip across the South of France to take my parents as far as Nice in just over a week. We packed the car and set off early morning just after breakfast. Our first leg in the car was going to be longest, a 3 hour drive further South towards the medieval city of Carcassonne. My parents really had no idea what was in store and as we approached the medieval city it came it to view from the motorway and they were blown away. We drove into town and found our hotel which was conveniently located, directly across the road from the old city, we checked in and headed to our rooms for a quick rest. The hotel was a fantastic little place with cosy yet decorative rooms which really had the French feel to them, and what was more we were only minutes walk to the entrance of the city.
After settling in we made the short walk to the entrance of the old city of Carcassonne, where my parents went photo mad. I’d been here a few times before now however I can remember the first time I saw it and
Carcassonne
The bridge across to the main keep in Carcassonne. appreciate what they were feeling, it’s such a unique place and so different to anything back home. First we decided to do the tour which meant walking across the inner wall through its many watch towers. The views across the wider Carcassonne were incredible from this height, and it was such a perfect day outside we could see the incoming planes arriving at the airport in the distance. Slowly we all made our way round the inner wall to the next section which was the museum. Thankfully they weren’t too bothered about stopping to read every plaque and information board so we breezed through in good time, we spent longer in the gift shop. Afterwards we had lunch at of the many café style restaurants, they all looked the same so we just picked one. We continued to explore the streets of Carcassonne until we felt we’d seen enough so headed back to the hotel for a rest before dinner.
In the meantime Hannah and I were searching on Tripadvisor for a good restaurant inside the medieval city. So many of them seemed either average or extremely expensive but we eventually settled on a place called Adelaide, as long
Carcassonne
Looking out over the modern cirt of Carcassonne as my folks were happy with it. We met them in the hotel bar in the early evening for a drink before heading into the city for dinner, thankfully they were more than happy to give Adelaide restaurant a go. Turns out the place was quite popular even when we arrived which was quite early to have dinner in France. But the restaurant was simply superb, the food was incredibly good we all had a ball with our waiter who was trying to get us all to order in French. After a fantastic meal we walked around the street lit at night and even though we already ate dessert, I insisted they try an authentic French crepe. Only my Dad and I could manage one. As we made our way back to the hotel we took some photos of the city illuminated at night, and stopped at the hotel bar for a quick coffee before heading to bed.
