Another first for us this the time to Paris is visiting Versailles. It is about 10 miles south of Paris and is reached by taking the RER train (part of the metro system). We got up fairly early to ensure that with travel time we would be there shortly after opening. Versailles was the King's residence for Louis XIV, XV, and XVI up to the French Revolution. Louis the XVI was married to Marie Antoinette who had her own small estate on the property as well. The train was packed with fellow tourists heading that way and now is a good time to mention that today is quite quite cold. The wind is blowing, there is no sun (that classic French gray sky!), and it is about 40 but with the wind colder. We arrived and ... read more

July 28th: Fairly early start; the crowds start early at Versailles. The lady at the bakery gave me change for €10 instead of €20, when I pointed this out she offered me a bag (?) somebody in the queue translated what I was saying in much clearer French and the matter was resolved… hopefully just a communication breakdown rather than “rip the tourist off” she did seem like a nice lady, lacking in ripabillity, but then one never can tell. For some reason there are lots of soldiers at the station, soldiers with automatic weapons. Now guns generally make me nervous, but BLOODY BIG GUNS make me very nervous indeed! ~Later~ Went to ask someone which tube to take to get to Versailles and as luck would have it, the people I asked were heading there ... read more

Late last year there were thoughts of perhaps experiencing the Orient Express Tour but at about $10,000 per person the 7 day journey seemed perhaps a tad too luxurious. Scrap that idea. Then the light bulb came on. Why not create our own Orient Express tour following the route on the various European rail company services. Paris to Istanbul. The route was laid out, costing no where near $10,000 but did we want to go to Istanbul again? We arrived at Orly airport somewhat South of Paris, as in the Eiffel Tower, so the first task was to get to our hotel. It was not really a task. For 9.32 Euros we purchased a metro pass and took the 7 minute Orly – Val shuttle train to the metro connection. Then it was just 2 transfers ... read more

If you have an extra day in Paris, one of the best excursions would be going to the palace and garden of Versailles. This will just take you a 45 minute train ride from Paris City Centre. A ticket will just cost you about 6 Euros roundtrip. The entrance fee to Versailles is about 13 Euros. Versailles is really different from Paris since it is very clean and there are few gypsies. This place is a must see since you will get to learn so much from the History of France. You will learn how their leaders treated the poor and oppressed. You will also learn how their leader’s used the money of the people to beautify their kingdom even though they are just 5 people living in the palace. In the end the people will ... read more

We impressed ourselves with our ability to stay up most of day 1. So much so that we were a bit surprised on day 2 that the kids appeared to be in a suspended sleep state and could not be roused. Not even with promises of fresh baked goods. Mark and I left the kids sleeping (having told Nathan--we are going to the bakery, tell your sister if she asks). Turns out he was not really listening. She awoke to find us gone and was none too pleased. Fear not, she did recover. We used Yelp to find a nearby bakery and with Mark's map reading talents, we were there with ease. Shelves lined with the most gorgeous pastries and breads. Loaves in perfect form, golden croissants, some with chocolate peeking out. We ordered 6 items ... read more

Up at 6:30 am. Ugh. We were up late last night - internal clocks are re-setting. The plan for today was to take the RER train to the the Palace of Versailles. With our bellies still full from dinner last night, we skipped breakfast. I stopped to pick up a Starbuck (yes, even here) for a mocha (tastes just the same). The train was easy to find and a half hour ride brought us to the end of the line. The museum hadn't even opened and the line was already snaking around the courtyard and grew while we stood there. Inside, there was room after room of gold, paintings and opulence beyond reasonable. We headed out in the noonday sun toward the garden. 250 acres of garden. It went on, and on, and on... We stopped ... read more

Todaywas dedicated to visiting the garden city, Versailles and to watching andabsorbing Parisian culture. I spent my time at Versailles entirely in the gardens, miles and miles of manicured green lawn, grasses and trees with beautiful pieces of art work all around. I found what has been my favorite Piec of art so far, check it out here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latona_Fountain The trip was fairly easy to plan and so I had time to comeback into town to hopefully catch the catacombs, those cellars full of the bones of the dead that were moved for hygienic purposes. Well, apparently every other tourist had that same idea as the line was easily 300 people deep. So, you're in Paris for a day, do you spend three hours in line to see the site? Or do yo find a local ... read more

Was a very cruisy day today. Went back to Sacré-Cœur Basilica so Zac could see it and take photos, and then had an afternoon tour out to Versailles, the palace of King Louis 14, 15 and 16 as well as Napoleon. This is a totally ostentatious place. All of the rooms have huge frescoes painted on the roof, and ornate carvings everywhere, most of the trim in the rooms is gilded, and there is marble, silver, gold all over the place. There is an entire wing dedicated to paintings of famous French battles, and treasures galore, and that is only inside. Outside is a massive garden, too big to walk around, you have to rent a golf cart to see it all. No wonder the peasants revolted, the palace is so over the top, even for ... read more

Day 6 Off to the Palace de Versailles today. More trains but first a new adventure. Public phone call to arrange pick up of lease car next week. First find public phone - walk the block only to find one opposite our apartment - d'oh... Free call number doesn't work so need to get phone card. Friends at the supermarket next door asked - this guy actually looks a bit like a mix of Basil Fawlty and a vulture - beside that he usherto then the corner news stand. Hand and rough French and we get a phone card - finally get it to work in the public phone and a time arranged to pick up car. Think we have missed the train we originally wanted to catch so we were wandering to station and got ... read more

Paris day 4 I was excited to catch up again with Candra from New Zealand who I had met through my Ireland tour. She happened to be passing trough Paris on her first day as I was leaving on my last day. We decided to take a tour out to the Palace and gardens of Versailles. Unfortunately when I got to St Michael's fountain the guides told me Versailles was closed due to the first of May public holiday in France. :-( I also couldn't find Candra so I was gutted. Luckily she walked back to the square 5 mins later and we found an info centre who told us if we caught the train out the gardens would still be open, and as it was the cheaper option we ran with it. We met a ... read more
