I wake up at 5:30 on Tuesday morning - I am excited - and tired. I don’t own a watch and never use an alarm to get up in the morning. As such whenever I have anything exciting or important to do the next day I wake up every few hours - a kind of faulty built in alarm system. I often wake up Danielle as well as I crawl over her to see her bedside clock to check the time. My hiking gear, clothing and research material is strewn about the spare room - I panic pack in about an hour. Danielle is organized - she has been packed and ready for days. I was given the spare room as a drop zone. Over the course of the past month I have been throwing stuff ... read more

The adventure began this year with a departure from Lansing at 4:00 headed for the Air France counter at O'Hare Terminal Five. We arrived on time and got through security quickly and with enough time for a snack of egg rolls. The plane was fairly comfortable though nobody slept much on the overnight flight. After picking up our bags and heading to the arrivals hall where a driver was supposed to be waiting for us with a placard, no one was to be found. Two phone calls to the company went straight to voicemail and went unreturned. This was a little frustrating because the shuttle was booked directly through Air France/KLM and paid ahead of time. We eventually found alternative transportation but were very frustrated after arriving at our Paris hotel to receive an email receipt ... read more

Tips for traveling in Paris: 1. Download the Paris Metro app - so helpful 2. Do not do Paris when the temperature is in the 90s. Our first "real" Grand Tour stop was Paris. I had been to Paris twice before but never during high tourist season or when the weather was predicted to climb into the 90s and 100s. This is true of all major tourist cities, but if you can plan your visit not during the summer months, do it. Not only is it tourist season, but France is also hosting the FIFA Women's Wold Cup and starting to prepare for the 2024 Olympics. If Paris is in your travel plans soon, definitely use the Paris Metro app and plan for construction and crowds. Our first day and a half were was spent with ... read more

As the saying goes, all good things--including this odyssey--must come to an end, so today we packed our suitcases for tomorrow's flight from Paris to Orlando. Our direct flight departs Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport at 2:40 PM local time, and is scheduled to land in Orlando around 6:30 PM. During the past sixty-four days we've traveled thousands of miles (with over a hundred of them on foot), taken almost 1,100 photos, and blogged more than 32,000 words. Of course, we suffered our fair share of aches, pains, and bumps in the road during our journey this year, but the memories of so many amazing sights--and especially the moments spent with dear friends--more than compensated for any setbacks and disappointments we encountered along the way. This final blog entry is mostly an attempt to highlight some ... read more

The weather since our arrival in Paris has been unseasonably mild, with temperatures hovering between 60- and 70-degrees during the day, with partly cloudy skies, and a few light, intermittent showers--quite a contrast from two years ago at this time, when we sweltered in 90-degree-temperatures! Today we decided to make a short outing to visit the Rodin museum, which is located adjacent to Les Invalides, the complex of buildings that includes the Dôme des Invalides where Napoleon Bonaparte is entombed. With the assistance of a bus ride as far as Les Invalides, the total walking distance would be less than a mile roundtrip, so the strain on Dee's sore foot would be minimal. After our lunch at a friendly little Italian restaurant down the street, we caught the bus as far as Les Invalides, where the ... read more

Since Dee bruised her foot in the unfortunate tumble she suffered earlier this week at Notre-Dame, we've stayed close to home, venturing out only to eat, buy groceries around the corner, or to take short walks. She's been able to hobble along at a snail's pace, but is understandably nervous for fear of another misstep on the rough, uneven streets and pavements that are so common here--and in many of the other venues we've visited during our trip. It's a bit nerve-racking for me as well, so I hold on to her hand even more tightly than usual to help her maintain her balance as we walk. Yesterday we decided--reluctantly and sadly--to shorten our trip by 5 days, thus returning on June 19th instead of the 24th. Given Dee's reduced mobility, it made little sense to ... read more

This morning we decided to witness, with our own eyes, the damage suffered by the iconic Notre-Dame Cathedral as a result of the recent fire. We learned of that tragic event just before we began this year's odyssey, while staying with our daughter and son-in-law in Orlando prior to our departure the following day. Since it was nearing lunchtime, we stopped first at the Café Constant, hoping to find an indoor table open, but instead had to settle for a cramped sidewalk table. This tiny café on rue Saint-Dominique, owned by the celebrated French chef Christian Constant, has become so popular that it's difficult to find seating--no reservations are accepted. I thought I recognized the young waiter from our last visit two years ago, when he served us and our granddaughter, and confirmed this later with ... read more

We departed Munich yesterday morning on a Lufthansa flight to Paris, and our arrival turned out to be memorable, in more ways than one. On the bright side, this marks the 10th visit to the City of Light since 2001, when it first captured our fancy. People sometimes ask us what is so special about Paris that makes us want to return, time and time again? Is it the centuries of history, art, culture or the French joie de vivre? Or perhaps it's the baguettes, crème brûlée--and the rest of the fabulous French cuisine--that appeal to us? While all of this is certainly true, to some degree, the answer is more elusive. The spell that Paris has cast upon us over the years may best be explained by the French phrase, Je ne sais quoi (literally ... read more

Sunday 28th April Since I was defeated yesterday in seeing all the places I had wanted to see, due to the rain, and since my train to Brittany was not until after lunch, I decided to hop onto the metro on Sunday morning and visit as many of those places as possible, before returning to check out and go to Mass at 11am. I got off the metro at Tolbiac and headed into the Quartier des Peupliers. Some very pleasant streets and gardens, especially near the Square de l'Abbé Georges Hénocque. I continued on into Floral City. What a beautiful and picturesque quartier! Many of the little streets are named after flowers, and the gardens and streetscapes are very pretty. It was hard to believe that one was in such a big and busy city. Being ... read more

Just finished having breakfast, possibly the final croissant of the trip, I will miss them, but my waist line will not. The breakfast room was packed several groups of retired people just finishing up to get on their tour bus for the day. We shared a table with a nice retired French woman, of course we could not converse. We have about an hour before our taxi arrives to take us to the TGV station and our train to back to Paris. Jerry is doing the last-minute packing so I thought I would get a head start on today’s entry. It has been really nice not knowing what is going on in the world, or hearing about the orange man we have as an imposter president. That will soon be over when we return home and ... read more
