OK. Firstly I should point out that I was quite prepared to dislike Paris. I had specifically avoided visiting here on my last trip to Europe. To me a good holiday experience isn’t just about the destination - but also about the people. So……. given the reputation of Parisians for intolerance of those who don’t make an effort to speak their language, and the fact that I know basically no French (and for a three day visit wasn’t exactly going to take lessons), I wasn’t expecting things to run smoothly. And my experience here was certainly didn’t start off at all well. My journey from Edinburgh to Paris ended up to be quite an ordeal. First the plane was over an hour late (which isn’t great when you’re forced to get to the airport two hours ... read more

Okay, here I go trying to remember everying. Laurent, the family friend showed me around Paris two days ago. We passed the government center, explored the left an right banks of the Seine, ate a cute French lunch at a cute French café and of course, visited Notre Dame. Wow, its totally amazing. It was interesting to be with him because his English isn't as good as Garance's or her family's but we managed in Frenglish. We walked through the outside of Le Louvre and he explained to me how all the arches in the city went straight through the center and were made so that the sun set through them and that the Equinox can been seen through them too! Or something like that. It was two days ago so I don't quite remember. We ... read more

It is the eve of my return to America, as the Europeans call our country, and as any traveler would do I am reflecting on all I have done and all I have learned over the last 10 weeks. For example saying you are from The United States frequently brings a second of recognition that can be eliminated if you say America instead. As I mentioned in previous blogs I have also found that Americans are sadly not always well received here for the reasons we as Americans seem to so casually admit...we are in general much louder and more obnoxious than many European cultures. But what about all of the Americans that have successfully blended into the crowd, quiet and appreciative of their chance to learn about a foreign place and its people? This type ... read more

(Ok, so I'm far behind in the blog again, I'll give you the nutshell version to catch you up . . .) Lisa, Wendy and I arrived in Paris via Eurostar without a hitch. I expected more out of the underwater part of the ride, but it was pretty much like taking Bart from the city to the east bay, uneventful. As our taxi drove us to our hotel and past all the sights, I already knew I wanted to come back. We were staying three nights and I had a feeling I could stay much longer. We arrived at our palatial hotel (not!) and quickly set out to view the Eiffel Tower at night. Magnifique! It is truly amazing. Our sight seeing began with the Arch de Triomphe. I know my first thought should have ... read more

So I keep losing track of time because I'm just having a blast. I'm really acquiring and insider's view because I am living with a family. Wednesday I woke up at 1pm. A curse and a blessing. I really needed to sleep. I accompanied Garance on her errands all day and it was sooooooo nice to not be in touristic places. I still have not seen the Eiffel Tower. That night We watched the football game with some family friends and although there was a language barrier the fact that France won the semi- finals left no emotional barriers. The little French I know allowed me to hodge podge my way through things. I spent a long time speaking with her mom and a family friend but it was fantastic. The next day was the first ... read more

So I've spend the last few days in Paris with my trip coming full circle to where it really began over 2 months ago. The weather is heaps better this time and the city is bustling with people shopping like crazy. I was told that for 6 weeks the stores have to hold crazy sales. I don't know who mandates that or if it's just something that happens every year but either way the streets are crowded and the stores are a disaster. It looks like the sales are pretty good though. I've only stopped a few places reminding myself I have very little space for anything. This would be a great place to note for all of you out there reading my blog that I am not bringing things home for everyone. I'm sorry to ... read more

as the world now knows, les bleus is in the finals. again, the capital erupted in celebration at champs elysée and other major towns in france. it is such great news and am real happy for the french! this victory is a tonic for a country that needs it. exhausted by civil unrest in its cities & suburbs, and politically paralyzed, France is rallying around their team and the unity, pride and nationalism of its people echoes a more glorious time. i hope the goodwill lasts. allez les bleus!!... read more

I spent the fourth of July in Europe and Im extremely glad that I did. Im dead tired right now but happy as anything. Right now Im typing on my friend Garrances computer on her French keyboard (which is why there are no apostrophies) and reliving this magnificent day in my head. I had an 8 hour flight to London where I slept rather badly but I dont much care. I found my way rather easily around because it was a lot like New York. When I stopped for directions the man readily aquiesced to helping me saying that he would never turn a pretty lady down!! It hadnt really hit me yet that I was in Europe until I saw Emma and Kiera standing there. They were smiling and happy to see me. They took ... read more
