Issy seems to have come down with a cold, which sucks for her. She decides to rest up so I set off on my own to see what I can discover. We’ve been told that there are more than 300 chateaus in the Loire Valley, so I think we might struggle to get around to all of them in the four more days that we’ve got here. It seems that for something to be called a chateau it needs to satisfy a few specific criteria, and your average Frenchman can’t just decide one day to hang a "chateau" sign out the front of his house and start charging passers-by exorbitant fees to look around it. Chateaus are generally palaces or large manor houses, and they can’t be in cities. If you want to show off your ... read more

We wake to find that it’s been raining overnight, and it is thankfully much cooler. We meet Mark and Carol and head for the Chateau de Chambord which is about 40 kms north east of Amboise. As we pass through some small villages along the way Carol tells us that all these villages have their own festivals at some time during the year and that we should see if there are any on while we’re here. She says that they all have their own themes, and that the festival at the village next along the river from Amboise, for example, is called “The Festival of the Stuffed Tomato”. We read that Chambord is the largest chateau in the Loire Valley and one of the most recognisable chateaus in the world. It was built by King Francis ... read more

Today we travel to France’s Loire Valley. We wait in long lines of traffic as we try to get to Amsterdam airport to catch our train. Our taxi driver tells us that this is due to “the incident” yesterday. We’ve given up watching the news, so we don’t know what he’s referring to. He makes it sound very sinister, and our minds immediately jump to terrorist attack. Fortunately it’s nothing quite so dramatic. It seems instead that someone at the airport petrol station inadvertently pushed the wrong button, which meant that 50 flights couldn’t take off because they didn’t have any fuel. The chaos that we see here this morning is apparently the flow on from this. Our train to Paris leaves twenty minutes late. It then crawls across Belgium, but as soon as we cross ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Blois April 21st 2019

Friday 19th April We set out this morning for the long trip from Rocamadour to Blois, on the Loire River. Our stop along the way was at Oradour-sur-Glane. This village was destroyed by Waffen SS soldiers in 1944, as a brutal reprisal for the activities of the French Resistance as the Nazis began to lose the war. The inhabitants of the village were rounded up, men were separated from women and children. The men were taken to various spots around the village and shot. Their bodies were burnt. The women and children were put in the village church which was set on fire. Nearly seven hundred civilians were murdered, including over one hundred children. The buildings of the village were blown up. Very few people escaped the roundup and massacre. De Gaulle had the village left ... read more

This posting will cover four days as we have taken some chillaxing time as we picked a rural property to stay at with a pool. 16th. The trip from Beaunes was great for me as finally I have got Rose into the driver seat. We started out from Beaunes to Châteauneuf-en-Auxois, but we had to stop when we found a lock in the middle of nowhere. Châteauneuf-en-Auxois is one of those fantastic little towns with so much to see, the website unfortunately didn't indicate that they shut for lunch so we missed a tour of the Chateau, but we found a new house to buy (see Photos). Once back on the A road we stopped at a rest stop for Rose to take the reins. We spent the next two hours on C and D roads ... read more

This holiday was always going to be a strange one. We knew before we set off that we would never manage to get away for our normal 4 weeks holiday. An illness at home had left us needing to be within striking distance of home. We had to keep in touch on a daily basis. We needed to just plan a day ahead and no more than that. Up to now we had managed a holiday of sorts. A little sun, testing out of Gabby, some good food and we had found out we could cope in a smaller space without biting each others heads off. In the last two weeks we have developed a routine and realise that both of us cannot stand in the same place at the same time. We have got used ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Loches May 2nd 2018

Our next stop after Oleron was Loches a royal city with an impressive donjon and one of those stories about a King and his lover. It is one of those stories that repeats itself over time in different places. A man , royal or not seems to fall in love with someone he shouldn't have. A woman of less than royal birth and one that is deemed unworthy of him, She might be his mistress. Destined never to marry him but she is there in the background. It happens in most countries histories at some time and we come across it time and time again. Think Ines de Castro born in 1325 in Galicia, Portugal. She is best known as lover and posthumously-recognized wife of King Peter I of Portugal . The dramatic circumstances of her ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Tours April 16th 2018

This is our last full day in Tours, as we depart for London tomorrow afternoon, where friends Larry and Danielle Cobb arrived early this morning. They've already begun to set-up housekeeping in the apartment we'll be sharing with them, and we're looking forward to exploring London together. We had no formal agenda for today, other than packing. But we did take the bus into town around noon to have lunch, and to find some last-minute gifts for Sophie, who has done so much for us during our stay. The weather was very pleasant, with mostly sunny skies and mild temperatures (low 70s), so after Dee finished at the Galleries Lafayette we walked to the Place Plumereau for lunch. We would have much preferred to have our last meal in Tours at the great little restaurant we'd ... read more

This afternoon, Sophie drove us to visit the royal château at Amboise, a massive pile of stone perched above the charming little town of Amboise, which lies 17 miles east of Tours, on the south bank of the Loire river. As has been the weather pattern lately, the day began under overcast skies, but by late afternoon we enjoyed sunshine, blue skies and temperatures in the low-to-mid-70s. Unlike the other châteaux we've visited so far, the Château d'Amboise served as a royal residence for much of its existence. Since Neolithic times, the Châteliers promontory, the 120-ft.-tall hill upon which the château rests, has been an ideal observation post, while offering an exceptional natural defense. There is evidence to suggest that Roman legions under Julius Caesar (100 BC-44 BC) occupied this fortified site. As the residence for ... read more

Europe » France » Centre » Azay-le-Rideau April 14th 2018

This afternoon we visited yet another of the châteaux for which this area is famous, thanks to the generous offer of our lovely and charming hostess, Sophie. She insisted upon driving us to the village of Azay-le-Rideau, located about 15 miles southwest of Tours, so that we could visit one of the most beautiful Renaissance buildings in the Loire Valley, the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau. We arrived at the entrance to the château at 3 o'clock, and Sophie would return to collect us at 4:30, telling us she would do some shopping in the village. But I suspect she parked nearby, and then passed the time on her smart-phone, while sitting in the car, until it was time to rejoin us! Dee and I cannot even begin to express our gratitude for all the kindnesses Sophie has extended ... read more
