La Fête à Gron – J’y étais When we arrived at the Aire de Services in Gron, a gate blocked our entry. Disappointment fell on us like a wet blanket, as we had begun to relax in anticipation of a quiet night in this parking area, provided for motorhomes in this village. We manoeuvred to leave, as we knew of another nearby location. However, the man controlling the gate would not hear of it, and insisted we stay. He opened the gate, made us welcome, explained that the village was having a Fete and even guided us into a parking bay. The village of Gron (population about 2,000), six kilometres from the city of Sens, one hour south-east of Paris, sits on a knoll overlooking the Yonne river valley and is surrounded by grain and small ... read more

Where do I even begin? It's 2:45am and Aurelie's wedding was a 2 day event. We started off on Saturday, April 7 with a Chinese tradition of the fiancee coming over to the house and paying red envelopes to get to his future wife, in this case Aurelie! Richard and his friends paved their way and made their dues, paying envelope after envelope to get to Aurelie. When he reached his bride, they did their prayers and headed over to Richard's house where we would have lunch. When it came time to 4pm, we then made our way to the city hall where they officially became man and wife. It was a bit different than most American weddings, as it seems this was the most important day vs. our usual wedding ceremony. As soon as that ... read more

Sens is a gorgeous town – bustling yet quaint, ancient yet modern and we ended up staying for 5 days. Mooring was alongside the town quay, electricity and water included and was absolutely free. Not only that, but the moorings overlooked the gorgeous 12th century St Maurice church and as the sun set every evening we were treated to stunning views of its stained glass windows shining. The moorings were also home to a family of ducks – those of you who know my love of birds will understand how this was the icing on the cake for me!! We pulled up behind a big Brit barge owned by a lovely chap called Andrew who rented space on his boat to holiday makers. He was in between guests and doing some work on his barge. As ... read more

The River Yonne We left our barge mooring at Avon early on Sunday morning, determined to get through as many locks as possible and onto the River Yonne. We passed St Mammes, which seemed to be in Festival mode - loads of huge péniches were decorated with bunting and flags and rows of stalls and stands were set up on the quayside. It was all very pretty! A little further on there was a strange miniature circus set up by the river - coloured tents, a truck but no sign of any people or animals - god knows what it was, we went closer to try to find out but had no luck! Within 3 hours we had gone through the last two big Seine locks smoothly and joined the River Yonne. Our pilot guides had ... read more
