Well readers you know how it is – you get to the end of a week at one place and are starting to struggle to find things to do and see. Well that’s what it was like this morning. Woke up after having a bad night tossing and turning and aching after my fall yesterday. Large bruise come up on ankle which has puffed up beautifully. Aching rear end which could have been worse if my padding had not been so good. Walking and sitting difficult but not going to spoil our holiday. A friend on Facebook did say that if I had our motorhome I wouldn’t fall in it but not entirely sure that is true.
Weather started off not good again with low mist.
However over breakfast happened to look at the brochure that we had been using as a table mat and it mentioned Chateau de Losse which was about an hour away from where we were staying. On the way called at the local Musee de Truffe at Sorges which celebrates the black diamond of the Perigord. Only small but quite an interesting museum with a few exhibits and explanations in French about Truffle growing , cultivating and sniffing out. Would have been interested in tasting one but they didn’t offer any and not sure we could have afforded even the tiniest..
Lunch was at a small restaurant on the way to Chateau de Losse called Archambeau in Thonac.. Sitting in the sun under the trees Glenn and I enjoyed Potage to start – the bowl was full and would have served four easily , a salade, something unprounouncable with turned out to be Lamb in a curry sauce and finished off with Creme Caramel. Four courses – excellent value 14 euros each. The local OAP group dropped in and had lunch before heading for their visit to Hautefort.
Chateau de Losse was a real gem with beautiful garden which must have looked lovely in the Spring and Summer with the lavender, roses and wisteria blooming . If you are a garden lover this was an interesting garden set in the fairy tale setting of the chateau itself which is surrounded by an empty moat. Not sure about the guided tour as it was only in French and even if you have a smattering of the language the guide spoke so fast you lost the will to live. Cost 7 euros each so quite a cheap and interesting afternoon. Drove back pondering on the roads and wondered how you would be able to drive a motorhome round some of the small villages. Even we gave up trying to follow the sat nav when we looked at the road narrowing in front of us. Point to remember when we get home we really must check out the specific sat navs for motorhomes which hopefully when you enter the height and width of the vehicle wont take you down narrow roads.
A lovely day to end our week in Thiviers – tomorrow we head for Angouleme and Coucousac a small hamlet near the village of Siecq. .
