It is 1:30 AM here, and I'm sitting on the couch. Batman Begins is on the teley (I am strongly influenced by the Brits and their parlances, because, well frankly, I cahn't be bothered...). I slept for an hour, but woke up in a sandy, sticky mess with a mosquito celebrating on my skin. Seems I've fused with the beach. I am salt water and sand. I coudn't take it so I took a cold shower and now I'm here, fresh to type clean nothings for you. I think my time here is coming to a close. I feel the wave slowing down and that's fine. I'm glad I decided to stay longer, even if it means I won't be able to do the whole Camino. In fact, I'm not sure where the Camino stands right ... read more

Hallo tout le monde! J'espere que tout va bien chez vous, et que vous tout trouverez beaucoups des petits details dans le jour a vous faire exploser la tete! D'accord. Today: Woke up at 8. Put feet on floor. Took one breath. "Van leaves in five" I heard. Hustled to cabinet. Took out box of French cereal. Same shit, different country. Put in the fattiest milk; like whale blubber. Slurped it up and probably made alot of irritating sounds as I ate. Got in van. Put on headphones. Let music have me. Felt feelings swirling. Realized I was alive and not dead. Imagined surfing in my mind's eye and let it mix with the music. "The ocean breathes salty": can anyone name the artist who sang those lyrics. I'll mail a gift to first correct reply. ... read more

Hello all! I woke up this morning to a sky painted pure blue. Excuse me, that's bleu. And thank god for that. After five days of waiting, the surf community was growing restless. Waiting is, I am told, a normal feature of surfing, but for this region, at this time of the year, the poor weather was very very uncharacteristic. But enough about the fucking weather already. I'm sounding like a Jewish grandmother. I've been in the water four times now. Getting a little bit of a groove. Groove in this case, for me, does not mean proficiency. It means comfort in the water, comfort on the board, and an improved understanding of the way the waves move. I have been getting up, standing and riding some waves. This is due to my primary training with ... read more

Another endless rainy day here. Shit! I'm stuck in this house in the suburbs. The rain just keeps on falling. The world cup is on, so I guess that is something. And one guy here is a trained chef so he's been cooking up killer lunches. Yesterday I did get in the water after all in the rain. The wind was inshore, which meant that the waves were big and rapidly pounding, one after the other. I couldn't even get out. I was like Tom Hanks in Castaway before he comes up with the sail idea. The waves kept pounding me back. Tough, angry sunsofbitches. There is a technique called "duck diving" by which you can go under the wave with the board, but I was no master at that. The other dudes agreed it was ... read more

I arrived in Seignosse yesterday after a day of pacing around Bordeaux, grabbing some big city supplies for the eventual eternal walk in Spain. Bordeaux was interesting. Old broken buildings mixed with fancy cobblestone center city styles. I felt that familiar feeling of being very strange and apart. A yearning to find myself in the middle of something alive, some cultural event, or some surprise invitation to a party or dinner where I'd be swallowed up by a family or a group of young fun people. Alas, I was alone and I walked the walk of the foreigner. I sat and ate cherries on a bench and spit the seeds out and wondered if the pollution police would descend out of the sky in parachutes to arrest me for degrading the land. I flirted with a ... read more
