Another week come and gone here in lovely Pau. Nothing super eventful has taken place, but there have been lots of fun little occurrences that necessitate a blog update. On Monday, I was invited to lunch by Jean-Luc, one of the English teachers at Jeanne d’Albret. (For those of you who are curious, he’s the 3rd Jean-Luc I’ve met since I’ve been here). He and his wife Annie are lovely people, and over Quiche Lorraine and a good glass of red wine we talked about the US, France, teaching, and all things in between. After lunch, I helped Jean-Luc with some translation questions he’d had about a book he’d read over the summer. When I saw what some of the words were, I almost laughed out loud. The book was full of “southernisms” like “conniption fit” ... read more

Home Sweet Home!! Hello friends and family! I’m pleased to be able to say that I finally have a place of permanent residence in Pau. I am proud to no longer be an SDF, which is the PC term in French for a bum (personne sans domicile fixee). The answer to everyone’s prayers came in the form of the Canterot family. Their middle daughter, Laurence, is in one of my classes at school. Her parents are dentists, are their house is only a 5-minute walk from College Clermont. The whole family is absolutely amazing. There are four daughters (Sabine, Laurence, Elsa, and Charlene) , a golden retriever named Ruska, an Italian kitten named Bacci, and of course M. and Mme. Canterot. They’ve all been so welcoming and great and I can tell I’m going to love ... read more

I know it sounds like the start of a bad joke, but actually, it’s Pau’s 2007/2008 Language assistants. Wednesday was the orientation where we finally got to meet all the other wandering instructors of living languages who are converging on Pau for this academic year. We had to be at the Lycee St. Criq at 9 o’clock to being our day of introduction to the Bordeaux Academy (of which Pau is a member). The morning was essentially a complete waste of time. In an effort to impress the assistants with their grasp of technology, or maybe just in an effort to avoid reimbursing our transport fees to and from Bordeaux, the academy had set up a video conference, with one location for each of the five departments that make up the Bordeaux academy. However, the technology ... read more

So you read about the stereotypical 4 hour long French lunches in every little travelogue that’s flooding the market these days, but let me tell you, you can’t really grasp it until you’ve experienced it. On Saturday night, Laurence called me up and invited me to have lunch at their house the next day. Being the devoted Francophile that I am, I knew this wouldn’t be just some casual sandwich, so I was prepared to be in for the long haul, and I made sure to bring a hostess gift. I think I’ve already made it pretty clear that I would love to kidnap Laurence’s children in order to have 24-hour access to their unmitigated cuteness. The twins are absolutely delightful. They were a little shy around me at first, but once they got used to ... read more

And I'm finally able to update again! Still no internet at my place, and the apartment search continues, although I may have found something, but it won't be avaliable for another 8-10 days. Anyhow, I found a restaurant in the center of town with free wifi, so now all I have to do is eat lunch here every day for the rest of the year and you'll hear from me regularly ;-) Here's all the latest from Pau...but no pictures this time, sorry! Les Bearnaises… And no, I don’t mean like the sauce. A Bearnaise is what you call someone from the Bearn region of France (and a person from Pau is called a Palois, I’ve come to learn). Things here are continuing to roll along with varying degrees of speed and ease, but the Bearnaises ... read more

Ok, well maybe its not actually that big. Maybe it just feels that way because I don't know my way around yet. Oh, and for those of you who are interested, the town's name rhymes with "Toe", but you have to say it with your jaw dropped and your mouth really rounded in order to get that obligitory "French" sound. I know the other question you're all dying to ask, besides how you pronounce the name of my new home, is "When the heck is she going to stop updating!" Well, sorry to dissapoint you, but I'm making full use of the free wireless internet at the hotel while I have it, which means tant pis pour vous! (too bad for you). So, having caught you up on my meandering and misadventures in Versailles, I'm getting ... read more

Finally, a real update thanks to wifi internet access. I'm actually in Pau now, checked into my hotel, but I'm going to back up and fill you in on my weekend in Paris/Versailles, so indulge me, if you will ;-) CouCou tout le monde! So here I am, safe in France and back in the bosom of my loving French family. I have missed them so so much, and I’m so happy for the chance to spend time with them before I head for Pau. I left Wednesday evening from Philadelphia. Now, for those of you familiar with other installments of “Kate flies home: Tales of Terror from our nation’s airports”, you know that Philly and I do not exactly have the greatest track record. They’ve lost my luggage at least twice, and my flights always ... read more

And I've certainly been doing plenty of that! Here are the hilights from my trek all over Versailles and Paris this weekend! Saturday and Sunday, I was mostly on my own in Versailles, because the de la Bigne’s had a family wedding in Normandie. Before they left, I got to see Thomas and Georges, two of my “French brothers”. Thomas is absolutely hilarious. When Chrystel admitted that she was the only member of the family who didn’t like “bandes desinees” (comic strips), Thomas scowled and told me “it’s a real social handicap, you know”. Apparently there’s a French television program with puppets that satirizes just about everything both at home and abroad, and Thomas told me that the United States is represented by a puppet of Sylvester Stallone, quelle horreur! So after everyone left on Saturday, ... read more
